Wrapping up Let This Radicalize You with my book group tonight. This book has been a wonderful guide, and I have some of the final lines taped over my desk:

"How will you practice and cultivate hope today?"

"You are not needed everywhere, but we are all needed somewhere."

I've rambled about this before at the old place, but not here, so why not, let's get into what my process has eventually become over my career.
Novel writers! Those of you who plan out whole books, with detailed chapter outlines that you then stick to, etc… how do you do it? What does that look like? How long are the outlines and what do you include?

A Black Hawk helicopter. SWAT teams repelling to the roof. 300 agents. Flash-bang grenades. A TV crew.

“It’s 20,000 of them running through my house like we got Saddam Hussein in the closet."

For all that, fed prosecutors filed no criminal charges against anyone who was arrested.

Stunning report.
“I Lost Everything”: Venezuelans Were Rounded Up in a Dramatic Midnight Raid but Never Charged With a Crime
Authorities said Tren de Aragua “terrorists” had taken over the building. A ProPublica investigation found little evidence to back up the government’s claims. For the first time, the Venezuelans arres...

The "spreading OUR" work around is the important part btw.
We are not disposable characters.
We are not artifacts of the past.
We are not research subjects.

We are however highly impoverished, and more likely to die by violence than to live past 65.

so pony up while we're alive.
Pro-Tip.

Stop talking about Native Americans, and start talking to us, then spreading our work around.

Lots of lovely folks want to cook for neighbors, fill community fridges during SNAP shutdown but are intimidated. A mutual aid group in Flatbush, Brooklyn has been feeding 80+ people every single week for a year and a half or so now. Nobody is born knowing how to cook for 80, so here's our guide!

The far right has long fantasized about killing non-white people using images of zombie hordes. Now it’s official government policy.
For those unfamiliar with the Halo games, the Flood is a parasitic alien lifeform so bad that superweapons known as Halos were built as a last resort to kill all sentient life in the galaxy in an effort to stop them. And the official DHS page is memeing about it while referring to immigrants. Vile.

Publishing is a flat circle
St Jerome writing in the 5th century, ahead of his time in hating on overly ornate special editions of books, where “parchments are dyed purple, gold is melted into lettering, manuscripts are decked with jewels, while Christ lies at the door naked and dying…”

We are producing a detailed podcast series about this whole time period in Italy. This was part of a wider movement called self-reduction, whereby workers and local working class people would choose their own prices for many goods and services, and enforce them with strength in numbers.
Starting in Milan, in 73, revolutionary groups would mass up, go into supermarkets and chase out the bosses/security, get on the loudspeaker and declare everything free. They would then make revolutionary speeches while shoppers gleefully enjoyed the discount. They called this "proletariat shopping"

The only thing less useful than a political action you think is useless is complaining on the internet about that action.

For fuck's sake, just do the thing you want to do! The people you're complaining about won't be convinced by your posts, but they might be convinced by your effective actions.

THE TERRAIN HAS CHANGED. Liberal recuperation is not in effect the same way. We are in a situation where things have potentially different meanings + effects. Yes major parade style protests are part of what got us here (and Im not personally interested) but so did posting about how much they suck.

The decline of third spaces and hangouts, such as malls, video rental places, arcades & skate parks has been a direct result of the rise of convenience and has also been objectively bad for society as a whole. Its not that everyone HAS to socialize, but having no option to without bars is a failing.
Do you have any extremely niche, but serious, ethical stances?

Note that this fight was much bigger than whether one comedian gets pulled off the air. (Kimmel is fine, but as far as I'm concerned it's not even about him.)

Fundamentally, this was about whether the Trump FCC/administration could ignore the First Amendment.

For the latest No Failure, Only Practice, I wrote about using what Robert McKee calls "cue words" to structure better dialogue. I use examples from Denis Johnson and Ursula K. Le Guin to show how cues keep dialogue efficient, understandable, and energetic. I've had good luck with the tactic lately!
