ICE can be abolished tomorrow. Not just reassigned or reorganized, but abolished.

Politically maybe hard, but policy-wise pretty low-hanging fruit.

But abolishing CBP is trickier, and likely requires some restructuring, more than just reassignment.

It's time to start working that out now.

Wait, what the hell is this? Bullet holes in the front windshield, rear windshield blown out, tires blown out, still running with money in the cup holder? Did ICE or CBP murder someone and take the body? This is nuts.

Finally.
Sen. Chuck Schumer said Democrats will not provide the votes needed to move an appropriations bill forward in the U.S. Senate if funding for the DHS is included.

Schumer called Saturday's fatal shooting of a man by federal agents "appalling — and unacceptable in any American city."

Ouch.

And probably accurate, especially considering the company he keeps.
Danish parliamentarian Rasmus Jarlov speaking to MS NOW on Stephen Miller comments regarding Greenland: "I hope he’s kept away from young women, because that’s the mentality of a rapist. You can’t defend yourself, so I’m going to take you. That’s basically what he’s saying."

This is why I like listening to folks like Tom (and @davidfrum.bsky.social, and others). Half of my family is conservative but I listen to them. I try to understand their world view.

I’ve had so many friends call me out on this. “What is there to learn from them? They‘re just evil and stupid.”
I was asked in college why I was so complacent about debating. And I said: "You go to a liberal university as a conservative kid, you get used to arguing with 50 people at a time; liberal kids, by comparison, have rarely ever met someone who disagrees with them until now and it blows their minds."
Another fair point ala "Liberals claim to want to give a hearing to other views but then are shocked and offended to hear there are other views." - William F. Buckley.

This whole fucking thread, man...
In 2019, the rate of fatal police shootings in the US was 3.1 per million residents. By contrast, the rate in France was 0.14 per million, and in Germany, it was lower.

In Germany, police officers discharged a total of 85 bullets at people in the entire year of 2011.
I’ve said it and I believe it is true

There is a willful forgetting and suppression of the memory of the hundreds of protests that shook this nation for the past decade and a half. So while Canadians and European laypeople whine “Americans don’t do anything,” the Americans are actively suppressed

I’ll be honest. I’m hopping mad that there are more republican signatures than dems. They’re supposed to be the anticorruption party – at least compared to Trump – but it looks like this country just doesn’t have one.
JUST IN: A total 14 House members have signed a stock trading ban discharge petition for politicians, per BI:

Republicans:
- Luna
- Burchett
- Stefanik
- Crane
- Fitzpatrick
- Lawler
- Boebert
- Mace
- Steube

Democrats:

It would be different if they showed some competence in doing things like this – like if it was all part of some master plan.

But it’s clear that they’re all like Lauren Boebert: emotional, impulsive, and incompetent. It’s like having the country run by the pettiest click in a junior high school.

Whenever I’m feeling down about my country, I can always rely on Britain to remind me that we don’t have a monopoly on stupid.
They want people to delete their personal photos so there's enough water to allow people to continue making AI slop images
The UK government has urged people to delete old pictures and emails as 'data centres require vast amounts of water to cool their systems'.

Fascism is here. We are not “getting closer” or “in danger of.”

This matters because it frames our discussion: We aren’t trying to prevent it, we’re trying to defeat it. It’s not taking over our institutions, it’s taken them over.

Otherwise, we’re always behind, fighting a past we’ve already lost.

Let me qualify what Josh is saying. It is quite clear that the Constitution requires a census of all persons. It’s quite clear that past Supreme Court cases support this proposition. (For instance, the recent census question case makes no sense if persons doesn’t include immigrants.)
/1
Let me expand on this point. The Constitution is quite clear that you can't distinguish between kinds of persons in running the Census. And that is especially about apportionment for Congress. The original language makes it pretty clear when it talks about "free persons". But the 14th amendment ...
As Wessel states, now bulldozing the Census. It's critical to note that not counting people "in our Country illegally" violates the constitution. It doesn't speak of citizens or legal status, simply "the whole number of free persons".

This is obviously bad for trans folks, but it captures a lot of others too. Basically if you aren’t straight and white, information about your history would be suppressed.

This is one of the biggest threats LLM’s pose to society, especially since most people trust them completely.
which means at least its enterprise model will comply with the terms of EO-14319—preventing woke AI in the federal government—that will require them to suppress or distort factual information about “transgenderism.”

so, “my use case is different & special” openAI users—welcome to the epistemicide.

I know we’re all tired of the constant moral outrage, but I have to wonder what kind of person attacks a *children’s hospital* and doesn’t stop and think “wait, am I the bad guy?”
"We are here to affirm, uplift, and advocate for transgender and gender diverse youth...and we remain committed to doing all we can to support their care and well-being.”

The iron law of bureaucracy.
Bingo.
Elites and institutions have not “collapsed.” They have not “changed their tunes.” They have not “failed.” They are not “cowards.”

They were and are simply been focused only on their own self-preservation and profit.

Nothing has changed. They simply made a cost benefit analysis, and fascism wins.

I’m pissed about a lot of things that this government is doing, but this is near the top of the list (I so wish I could say this is number one, but disappearing people into concentration camps beats it).

So we can add blatant sexism to the list. And it’s a long list.
This anecdote from @radiofreetom.bsky.social about his mother’s service to our country and how Pete Hegseth is denigrating it is powerful stuff.
