Fascism tends to go after the minorities and most vulnerable first so yes, this is textbook (attempted) fascism.

But I think the larger topic is on how to fight. My take is arguing amongst ourselves over semantics isn’t helping. Presenting a united front against our common enemy would.

I think the trick is to remind people that assuming Trump has already reached his goal (turning America into a fascist state) makes it easier for him to achieve it.

What Jerry said. Thanks a lot!

I’m new to this conversation but is this about distinguishing between a fascist president and a fascist state?

Because I believe that Trump has a fascist mindset and wants to be a dictator. I also believe that we aren’t in a fascist state yet. Is that what you’re saying Or is it something else?

Guess we aren’t getting that second season of moon knight.

What’s crazy about this (one tiny fraction of the crazy) is that the show was set in WW2, the same war that showed, conclusively, that they’re obsolete.

But bullets are cheaper than missiles, so let’s spend billions on new battleships ‘cause they look cool.

Something happened in the mid to late 70’s that lead to this mess. I have no idea exactly what it was (a lot was happening then) but I suspect that both parties had a hand in it – especially the watergate democrats in congress.

Basically, I’m thinking of the old bill gates quote: “We always overestimate the change that will occur in the next two years and underestimate the change that will occur in the next ten.”

I’m not surprised that AI isn’t delivering everything it’s promising right away. I see AI today like pc’s in the early 80’s or the web in the mid 90’s. people knew they were big but we hadn’t seen the most important innovations yet.
September 24, 2025 at 8:59 PM
I agree wholeheartedly, but how? I’m a software engineer (also in AI’s crosshairs) and I don’t see a feasible way to stop it.

Even if we could somehow get a ban on the US, what’s stopping say China from advancing it?

The boom box was actually really good. We had one when I worked at best buy. It was the only speaker that would reach the back of the store - and it still sounded great.

Damn dude.

TOS had extreme heights but also extreme lows. Not everyone is okay with that.

TNG was way more consistent. They never hit those heights but they never bottomed out either.

I’m a DS9/SNW guy so I’m out of this fight, but I can respect anyone who picks any of those four as the best.

I’ll take Newsom as an attack dog and that’s it. I’m not letting Trump lower my standards for who should be in office – especially since that’s his goal.

He’s obsessed with it because Obama got one.

Believe me, I have problems with Regan. He was not a good president and we’re still dealing with the messes he caused.

That said, equating him to Trump is way off. Regan did put an optimistic face on America (“tear down this wall”) and he showed respect for the office.

Trump is something new.

We did better for a bit, then went back to losing.

We should’ve done a lot better IMO, considering the popularity of our policies vs theirs.
August 14, 2025 at 1:27 AM
I’m okay with the idea of bringing up ideas on how we got to the current state of things, even on points I disagree with (like this one).

For democrats, this is not an ideal state of affairs (to say the least). I’m also convinced that we don’t know how we got here. We should probably discuss it.
August 14, 2025 at 1:25 AM
A lot of people are saying no but this is the country that elected Regan and Trump. I’d say let’s go with the electorate we’ve got and pick someone who could win.

Personally I want Liz Warren, but I know our electorate would never go for someone that wonk-ish. So Michelle Obama or him.
