Dream study requires that we look at ourselves embedded in a dominant culture that actively - through advertising, social and mass media, and propaganda -attempts to shape our thoughts and behaviors by activating our instinctive reactions...

Human brains produce new ideas every second of every day. Sit down with a tiny child and ask them to explain something they're doing and you will hear half a dozen of them. Ideas are what humans *do*. The idea is by far the easiest part of any creative process.
But the point (there is a point) is, people fetishise the idea over the hard work of plotting and character development and research and internal consistency and just writing the fucker, because the Idea is the sparkly magic bit.

And this is what makes them put value in the AI prompt.

The AI bubble may be about to bust.

Peter Thiel has sold all of his Nvidia stock.

We all need to say this very clearly:

NO BAILOUTS FOR THEFT-TECH!

Expropriate their asses instead.

They stole from all of us and fully plan to burn the planet.

They owe us - not the other way around. 1/3

Freelancer Day at a German trade unions, representing, among others, artists, journalists, translators etc. The country is still very hostile to freelancers, with huge barriers in social insurance, pensions and employment status. Curious what the union will/can tell us today. @social.verdi.de

I think I’m just not going to respond anymore to foolishness about how LLMs are a true substitute for thought. It’s an utter waste of time. People who commit to that idea will find out that it’s nonsense in time, and they aren’t going to listen until then.

I’m sad that fellow remainers block me for pointing out that accession to the EU takes a long time and requires a lot of buy in from a large majority of the population, but that is the case. We are not looking at a fast process, and we would be far behind even Ukraine in the accession queue.

Das ist genau der Betrag, um den die Bundesförderung für das Deutschlandticket gekürzt worden ist.

A simple rule of thumb: Any politician who proclaims to be pro-EU while avoiding supporting re-entry to the Single Market is afraid of mentioning Freedom of Movement. Many have been playing that game for 10 years, and pro-EU voters are wise to it. Anything without Freedom of Movement is still Brexit

This kind of thing, btw, is one of the reasons I think it's right to use the (admittedly ugly) word 'Brexitism': there are multiple recurring threads linking Brexit to post-Brexit politics/ culture wars. So many things which aren't about Brexit per se are in/directly connected to it. 3/3

Months after the People's Vote March, a Brexit voter told me he didn't think it had happened. I said I was there. Still, he refused to believe it. His argument: If it had taken place & w/ 1m people, the BBC would've reported it.

Such was its tremendous reputation. Squandered & shredded. A tragedy.

If you ever thought of literary translation as some mathematical formula where there was somehow in there a literal solution, take a gander at a handful of professionals translating the first line of Beowulf and realize that it's art, and that these translators are as much authors themselves.
...if I'd done even the barest comparative reading of just the first line of Beowulf, I'd have been well on my way to a better sense of what literary translation involves.

I don't use generative AI because as a writer of fiction, it offers me nothing useful creatively and nothing trustworthy when I do research. It's not worth the environmental impact. That it's been created by stealing my work and using it in breach of copyright law is a further but separate issue.
Hands up if you've never used Chat GPT ✋

(I feel like Dozer and Tank in The Matrix right now - at first I didn't use it because, rather ironically, I'm lazy and stubborn (peak Taurus energy there) - literally no, don't make me use the new thing I don't wanna. Now I'm glad I didn't 😅)
Probably a good way to tell right now if the job you’re applying for is run by absolute dumbfucks is to ask if they’re using AI.

The ultimate aim should be that all pedestrian crossings are green for pedestrians by default and motorists should have to press a button to activate the lights so they can cross the footway.
Unless there's an unbreakably valid safety reason why not, all button-operated pedestrian crossings should activate the lights in pedestrians' favour instantly when pressed.
