One thing that truly has helped me personally from veering into that extreme that some progressive Christian’s will fall into is the psalms and DO/LOTH. At the same time they are definitely for the person who is oppressed by both worldly and personal failings

even my favored structural reforms are just finding ways to brute force a less destructive republican party, whether that is ending as much as possible the electoral bonus for representing rural areas or making multi-partyism more viable.

yep. i can identify any number of structural issues but at the end of the day the basic problem is the republican party. this has been apparent for at least 20 years. it is also an incredibly unpopular observation to make among “serious” people.
Right.

If you want a good explanation of why the American system of government worked well enough for 200 years and then suddenly stopped, it's because Republicans in Congress suddenly started letting their partisan interests COMPLETELY override their institutional interests
a lot of problems wouldn't exist if we had a congress with even an ounce of self interest

Make it a point every day to speak to at least one person in a way you could have spoken to them in 1990. Even if it's just intentionally picking the staffed checkout line and engaging in polite chitchat. If we do not do these things we forget how.
this is a very good time to go visit your friends (offline)
in all seriousness people are aggro’ing over increasingly stupid and bad things because they feel useless in the current moment which, to be serious, means you should log off and do more things instead of just screaming at someone

My six year old daughter loves whales. This is a paper full of whales she drew. And she is walking around asking everyone if they like whales. Drop a 🐋 in the chat if you like whales.

I think one of the unquantifiable factors of our immediate political moment is the extent to which huge swathes of older and low-information voters have a view of Latin America that dates to the 80’s or comes from popular media that focuses on narcos.

Trump loses … and what happened to all the institutions with weapons that have been MAGAfied? And I very much include the whole military.

I actually enjoy yelling at cars that run through crosswalk while I’m in the middle of it. I mean, I don’t enjoy nearly getting hit, but the yelling is rather cathartic.

this is what happens when you turn foreign policy into a kind of gender-affirming care for marginal elites who score three standard deviations north of the mean on fragile masculinity
Man, if this administration truly believes Putins believes that, then they have the worst Russian / FSU advisors and analysts.

People. Have. Allergies.

I've got a neighbor who loves Penny from afar but can't pet her because her allergies can be life threatening. You don't get to decide your well behaved, friendly dog basically counts as a person when dog allergies exist.
There’s nobody more annoying than the “don’t worry, they’re friendly” person who brings their dog into public unleashed. Sure, friendly to you. They don’t know me. I’ve been bitten by “friendly” dogs before. I love dogs, have two GSDs, but you still need to leash them like everyone else exists.

…So…who wants to tell me about their film cameras or Subaru?
i think this site really needs to figure out how to grow the non-politics verticals (the baseball moment was a good thing!) because i suspect a lot of the bad clusters come out of the political clusters driving 95% of ENG-lang posts
I'd be happy with big non politics accounts.

this may be the, uh, history major in me speaking out, but I will die on the hill of NEVER CALL HUMANS COCKROACHES BECAUSE IT NEVER ENDS WELL, even if they're Republicans or anybody else that you genuinely hate!
The problem with this analogy is that; rather than cockroaches, the Republicans 'in the house' are your roommates. They're real people, with agency and lives.
