Rei is the thread of the story. Some characters could meet and change little, like the Praesor and Soprakatos, who don't bc that's not how diplomacy works. Thadis meeting more people would change a ton. Like perhaps most of the story. And not necessarily for the better. #AwesomeCharacters #writesky

Hearing me enter, a middle-aged woman with strawberry-blonde hair, pulled back in a tight bun, looked up from her work and smiled. “Hello, Ray. How are you today?” “That depends, you have anything good for me, Jess?” “Do you have so little faith in me?” Jessica hovered a hand over her heart, as if pained, but she was careful not to smear blood from her gloves onto her scrubs. “It’s just been that kind of case, Jess. I’m having no luck so far. And this one is going to kill again. Soon.” “Well, maybe Greg here will be able to help you.” She gestured to the body on her table. “There is something I thought you would want to see.” “What do you have?” Jessica returned her glasses to the bridge of her nose with a shake of her head and turned back to his body. “Well, Mr. MacNeil, what do you think? Shall we tell her?” I smiled. “You know he can’t actually talk, right?” “Now you sound like my husband. And you’re both wrong.”

What’s the worst that could happen? I take a bite and start chewing. It’s a little dry, but it’s a weird texture combination of ham and… calamari? It also mostly tastes like ham, but with earthy undertones that remind me of bourbon. “Not bad, actually,” I say after swallowing and take another bite, this time with some crackling with it. I enjoy the crunch. Driona is sitting across from me at this small table filled with an assortment of strange foods. She’s already piled a triangular plate with a choice selection, which looks to be mostly fruit and vegetables. “Are you not taking any of this?” I ask her after swallowing again. “No. I… do not partake in consuming animals.” “Oh, well alright then. What veggies are good for you?” I ask, putting the portion down on my own plate. “I did not mean to suggest that you shouldn’t partake yourself on my account!” Driona exclaims hurredly. “Nah, it’s fine, need to eat something of everything, really. Can’t just live off of meat, you know.”

Don’t eat or drink anything they offer you, especially if you didn’t see it prepared yourself.* “What’s the matter?” the Sinnlenst asked, all smiles and politeness. “Afraid I’ve poisoned it?” “I wouldn’t put it past you.” “You wound me. Even if I’d stoop that low, it’d hardly do much to someone of your species.” He raised his own glass in mock-salute. “Though if you’re too scared to drink with me, by all means leave it aside.” *Don’t rise to the bait. Don’t rise to the bait. Don’t rise to the bloody bait.* Easier said than done, when Avebury had all but called him a coward to his face. But then again, the heroes in the penny dreadfuls faced down villains intent on poisoning them all the time, especially villains who were more powerful than they were. All he had to do was pretend he was one of them. “Alright,” he said, after a moment, lowering his glass. “I’ll drink. But we’ll mix our drinks first. Half of yours, and half of mine.”

Writing snippet: The lines in her mother's brow had hit a critical tipping point before supper was even on the table, so she'd left as quickly and quietly as she could. She’d learned to make herself small, shoulders in, slithering like liquid from the room, bare feet scarcely disturbing the dust. She went to sit on their front porch and listened for a while to the distant rumble of approaching thunder. Ignored the sobs emanating from inside. The breeze was dirty, chemical, carrying the chorus of a few crickets, but their chirps were slow and lazy. The last call of a dying breed.

There were slightly more than two hundred books in the library. By which, the words ‘slightly more’ did not, in any way, do justice to just how many more books than two hundred there were in the library. From a quick calculation, Mistress Copperbottom’s entire library wouldn’t even cover the top of the first, very long, reading table that stretched out before them. And the bookshelves themselves? Well, there was something to be said about overconfidence in one’s abilities. And that thing was ‘don’t get cocky’. Where Twii was openly and quite visibly shocked, both Rum and Hedric had far different reactions. A squeal of delight from Rum and a series of debilitating sneezes from Hedric. Probably due to the dust, because there must be an awful lot of it.

A young Grilled learning the ropes about how to be a cook + server at the Good Thyme Inn. He realizes he loves the chaos of the common room during dinner
Parsnips walked up behind Grilled, about to push him onward. “Ah, Lottie’s there, too. While you’re delivering the meal, ask her if she wants her dinner.” “Yes, Chef,” Grilled said, then took his first step through the labyrinth of tables, narrowly avoiding a drunkard swaying on a bench, deftly side-stepping spilled ale, and raising his hands high above the guests’ heads while ducking his own head when a massive Mornese man stretched his long, buff arms back. It was like dodging a swinging log. The common room was utter chaos and Grilled loved it. He thrived in it. This was the life he’d always meant to have. He approached Shallot and the haberdasher’s table from the side so the woman would see him coming and hopefully not hit him on accident. “Aya, here’s the food, ya,” the haberdasher said. “Mm, smells like heaven, saints bless.” She swirled her finger beside her nose as if physically twirling tendrils of scent and forcing them up her nostrils.

The eight Earthrealm warriors claimed their seats at the empty table. And Xiuying, the fool, the traitor, made her way towards Outworld’s coalition, to a chair beside the kytinn. The insectoid on her right ogled her with saliva dripping from its fangs. Xiuying pressed a button on her headphones and crossed her arms, her gaze on the clean plate before her. “Should we have brought more people?” Johnny gestured at all the vacant seats. Raiden sat down and propped his staff against his seat. “We have done so in the past. Nothing but disorder came out of it.” “You told us Outworld never sends two contestants of the same species,” Sonya remarked as she scanned the other table with the precision of a predator. “If they invited a fighter from another realm, they are not here.” She cast a surreptitious glance at Kung Lao and, ensuring he wasn’t listening, continued. “And neither is the Shokan Prince. Except for them, all of our opponents are present, right?” Raiden replied with a curt nod. “Do you know who will represent each species?” Kai asked. “You have trained to brave each of them. Who you will contend with bears little consequence.”

Sooner than she’d expected, they were standing in front of the one door in the rectory Wren had never been asked to enter. It was silly to be nervous now. She’d already seen and felt every glorious inch of the man. They’d shared the same bedroll for nearly a month. They’d drawn steel side by side and bled on one another and killed a man together and yet this small intimacy had turned the pair of them into a jumble of awkward glances and shuffling feet. “It’s really rather boring as bedrooms go,” the good brother said after the moment stretched on a little too long. “Not a single blood fountain or sacrificial dagger. There are a few skulls, but they’re very tastefully done.” “It’s sweet how you think I haven’t been in here before,” Wren smirked knowingly at Spencer. Realization dawned in his eyes and a rueful grin stretched across his lips. “Of course you would have.” He shook his head and laughed softly, tension draining away as he pushed open the door. “You probably read all the awful poetry in my teenage journals and rifled through my underwear drawer.” “Bad poetry no,” the thief followed him into the room, her oversized chemise billowing around her legs as she crossed the softly carpeted floor. “Underwear drawer, yes… but only out of a sense of professional pride, you understand.” The room was as she remembered it, cozy and comfortable with furnishings that were old but well made and lovingly maintained. The ebony four poster bed with its faded velvet curtains dominated the left side of the room. The right held a bowed bookshelves flanked by his and hers armoires. A hearth and mantel occupied the exterior wall with an overstuffed sofa and small table positioned near it to make a sitting area. Opposite the fireplace was Spencer’s writing desk. It was still a haphazard collection of papers, books, and detritus.

Text excerpt from THE RILL LORD, sixth and final book (April) of the Triempery Revelations series by L.L. Stephens. Snip shows Hans explaining (or not) to other people about his lessons with a toy bear. “What’s going on with you and that bear?” Arne finally asked two days after the meeting with the Kheld troops. “I’m learning something,” Hans told him, and left it at that. Since that lesson with Dorilian, the bear had become something of a familiar, appearing and disappearing from his presence as the game demanded. Hans would return it in person to Dorilian whenever he was able, and it would come back to him without warning—as he ate his meals, in the field where he discussed strategy with the leaders of his troops, when he stopped to lace a boot. Once it had appeared while he was meeting with the Kheld leadership, and he had been forced to pretend he had just retrieved it from under the table. Nalf had cornered him afterward to give him a warning. “Give up the toys, lad!” The Thegnard’s eyes blazed beneath his bushy brows. “Men with swords want to see their king do manly things like chasing women—or bat a good game of ball! Get yourself a stick, for gods’ sake!”

“Look, it could be much worse,” Light pointed out. “I had a great aunt named Prudence.” “You didn’t!” Mem exclaimed. “So did I!” “Did you really?” “Well, still do,” she clarified. “We call her Aunt Prudy.” “Much kinder than us,” he smirked. “Ours was Auntie Prude.” “No, that’s awful!” Mem covered her face, laughing again. “I suppose everyone in this city has an Aunt Prudence somewhere in their lineage.” “It’s required,” he agreed with a nod. Mem realized she was leaning forward in her seat, both arms on the table, her left still resting against his right, only just touching. He was leaning forward too, green eyes gazing unapologetically into hers, and suddenly she was hit with the shock of where she was. What was happening? She never struck up conversations with random strangers like this. She’d never possessed the art of “peopling” like Clara did. Each time she’d ever tried connecting with someone new, at a party or a prayer service, she’d always found herself awkwardly struggling for something, anything, to say. But here she was talking and laughing with this beautiful stranger as if it was the easiest thing in the world. Where had this version of Mem been all her life? She prayed desperately it wouldn’t suddenly run out. And then she worried that just thinking about it might kill it. Like a self-fulfilling prophecy, Mem immediately found herself searching for something else to say, and coming up empty. Anxiety squeezed her heart. Desperately, she cast a look back at the door into the club, latching onto the one subject she always retreated to. “I hope Clara’s alright.”

Random archeological nerdery from the mystery…
as it a dwelling and a hearth, with post holes and ash stains showing the legacy of someone’s millennium-gone childhood home? Or perhaps an outdoor midden or trash pile, stacked high with the refuse of a forgotten culture? These were often treasure troves for archeologists; broken shells and smashed pots telling the story of entire livelihoods and bringing the people who lived there springing vibrantly back to life. Talia had once read an entire cookbook based on what had been found in a third century roman pit toilet. She had seen some of the early reports about the new dig at the mounds with interest, but Fernandez and his team hadn’t released everything, as the research was still ongoing. The site, a low mound whose archeological worth had initially been questionable, had already been partially eroded by water. It was in a lower area of the park that was becoming increasingly swampy due to changes in the water table triggered by climate change. This was the impetus to explore the site, which had proven to be much more remarkable than they’d expected

"Don't like kids. Leave me alone," Haji hissed sharply to the side. Kyoka was mildly impressed. She saw his efforts to fight against the curse. He was actively trying not to harm a child with his own anger. He was aware he had a problem, but didn't realize it was unnaturally strong. There was no reason to irritate or toy with him if he was putting in that much effort still. It was awkward and frustrating to be bothered by a child during a night out drinking, after all. So, Kyoka reached up, and gripped his arm. He started to tug it away, but Kyoka only needed a moment. Runes and rings of patterns sparked, flashed, coiled, and extended along Kyoka's arm. Not just the table, but the entire bar stared, Masuyo yelping gently at the display being so clear. Haji was stunned enough not to yank his arm harder, staring into the whirling magical arrays as if hypnotized. The curse was crafted to defend itself, and shot spikes of darkness toward the spell constructs, but they couldn't damage the patterns. In the next instant, the spells erupted, flashing over Haji's body. It gave him an aura of purple-green light for a beat, while the curse burned away into nothingness with a faint screech of inhuman pain. Kyoka released him in the stunned silence of the entire bar. The unfortunate part about complying with Selene's completely reasonable suggestion was that Galen finally got her on his examination table for the first time in three months. "You know I would have a better baseline to work from if you would come in for your physicals when I tell you to," the doctor said, prodding at her back with something cold and metallic. "I know," Gloria said, resisting the urge to groan. She was seated on the padded table with her feet dangling a few inches off the ground. The microfiber folded under the pressure of her fingers as she gripped the edge like a lifeline. Selene was leaning against the wall next to the doorway, arms crossed like a weary sentinel. "He's right, Gloria." This time she did groan. "I know. I got busy." Galen quirked a brow at her, pulling away the instrument he was scanning her vitals with for a moment. "You're not too busy to have a drink with me in the lounge every week." This earned a laugh, punctuated with a snort. "Yeah, but that's fun."

Genius is innate and must be cultivated; it cannot be acquired through devotion or proximity to another’s mind. Jenny should read Middlemarch more closely lest she end up shackled to a hotter Casaubon with the same hollow center. A snip from my #WIP “Surface Tension.”
By their fourth meeting of the semester, Perez already had the class of eight seniors deep in Middlemarch and puzzling over Dorothea Brooke’s choice of Casaubon over Sir James Chettam. Sarah Kim sat directly across from Jenny, flipping through a marked-up paperback sporting more color-coded tabs than the Bible her Aunt Ro took to scripture study. And just like Aunt Ro, Jenny suspected Sarah’s tabs were less proof she’d read the thing cover to cover than a way of convincing the other women in the room that she had. At the end of the oblong table closest to the whiteboard, Perez leaned back in her chair and adjusted the tortoiseshell headband holding back her dark hair. White silk blouse/black chinos/silver bangles, Jenny had scribbled next to the day’s date at the top of her notebook. She’d been taking notes on female professors’ outfits since sophomore year, ever since she started to dream of an academic life for herself. As much as she liked Perez, she thought she played it too safe in her choices: neutrals with the occasional lavender cardigan or pair of drapey green velvet pants. Jenny intended to be more like Babe, who favored whatever she damn well pleased that day, be it a Barbie pink mohair sweater, black leather trousers, or a turquoise muumuu studded with gold paillettes. Maybe she’d have to sell a kidney to afford such choices, but she could figure that out later.

They went up a set of stairs, and into a ring of oval stands that dipped to a central examination table. On one of the many benches was the familiar blonde necromancer, Calliope Clayton, reading a book. Calliope greeted Alderius by holding up a finger. “One moment. I’m only...” She flipped forward several pages. “Ah... Never mind.” Calliope put a newspaper clipping in the book and closed it. Looking up, she gasped, “Alderius! What are you doing here? How have you been?” “Working,” he said. “Who is listening right now?” Calliope asked. “They all are,” Alderius said. Hopefully Cedric Gneisston would take that to mean the gods. Alderius asked Cedric, “Why is Miss Clayton here?”

Taraltos caught Laylee’s offered hand and was beside her in a heartbeat. Davik stood up next to him, taking Grinks’ hand as she began dancing on the table, keeping her eyes almost level with his. Laughing along with her in the joy of the music, Davik moved in time with a hunter’s precision that flowed perfectly with the goblin as she gleefully pranced and shimmied across the table. Laylee’s loincloth swung away from her muscular butt with every sway of her hips and twirl of her body; her hands never left Taraltos as he moved with a martial grace and strength - and a tragic lack of rhythm. He chuckled at himself and kept dancing, and Laylee kissed him all the more affectionately for it.

9. Technically, Rei isn't part of Kythene society. She has no godmark and isn't a priesthood affiliate. Which is illegal and can result in anything from imprisonment to exile or even being sold into slavery. So she hides in the Little Fundi and keeps her head down. #JanuaryWorldbuilders #writesky

Beren eyed the cakes. No one had made a move to touch them. “So why are those there? I know it’s not the greenhouse, so what is it?” Emma winced and shook her head, grabbing her braid and reflexively unwinding and rewinding it. Phoebe stared at her clasped hands with too much fervor, deliberately passing the buck to Cass, who muttered to herself as she grabbed the day’s paper and shoved it across the table. “You didn’t have time to read the Gazette then?” “No. I barely had time to eat today.” Beren pushed Emma back into her seat before the woman decided to go full June Cleaver. “Just… what did they do?” The others’ answering expressions of pained grievance ranged from sad to enraged, and realization thunked into place. “Oh lord. Charlie’s interview was in the paper today. What happened? What did Letty do?” She grabbed the paper and flipped it to the arts section. The new season was all set to begin, which was something of a triumph after months of carefully plotted sabotage that could never quite be pinpointed except in aggregate. The Grundys had obviously been building to something, determined to punish Charlie for having the gall to head up the city’s biggest money maker. It only took a few moments of reading for Beren to see what their latest salvo was. “Those— How dare they?” Her hands trembled, a dry sirocco rage stripping her control. “They deadnamed her!” “Hence the cakes. We want to be prepared when she gets home.”
