I had to go back and do the 1st deuteragonist question!

In Sigils of Malice, Calliope starts as a rival to Thalia until they get away from the ringmaster (a toxic father). After that, their goals always align.

They are polar opposites, but Calliope loves her cousin.

Deuteragonist Day 2! Now that we have met your second most important character, let's talk about their goals!

Do they have the same goal as the MC? One that is different but compatible? Or do they clash here?

So, I missed this one. I'd say Calliope, my MC's cousin, is the best deuteragonist.

Calliope is a fashionable necromancer, hopeless romantic, and disturbed by gore and corpses. I'm currently writing a short starring her and her abolitionist girlfriend robbing a bank.

What's your worst fear if you ever become a famous author?

Mine: It's a toss between theory crafters reading between lines that aren't there and getting roasted for an errant typo.

I’ve got a few. Where should I start?

After I’m gone, I don’t ever want my work sold to Disney or a similar company to just regurgitate the same uninspired story over and over again with different makeup, while locking it away from everyone else. Let someone who actually cares have the story when-

My worst fear is becoming famous in the first place. I've never understood the appeal, even as a child I didn't get it or dream of it.
Oh the fear being known.
If there was some way to...earn enough money to live off my creative writing while still maintaining a private quiet life, I'd take it.

I have a few. One would be my themes in my first book of feminism getting twisted and people feeling sorry for Ayden.

Going to live events and people walking out because they can't understand my accent (Kiwi).

People getting angry at book signings because I'm left handed.

No matter how much editing you do, it will always be the dumbest typos that end up in the final copy. Speaking for myself here. I know y'all are perfect.

Anyway, somehow I never caught "hanger" vs "hangar" in Lamia Book 2, but it's updated now.

#JanuaryWorldbuilders

Through the 2 published books, in order, she goes:

Acrobat/actress
Underground investigator/criminal
Sacred figure
Noble cleric's betrothed
Rescue fighter/worker for the Underground
Ghost/Adventurer
Psychopomp

Future stuff:
Cryptid

I dunno where she fits in society either.
#JanuaryWorldbuilders, tell me about your MC's (or another important character if you don't do MCs) role in society. Are they upper or lower class? What job/tasks do they do as part of this society? Are they even a member of a society?

#SFFChat Q3:

@sgwolfeauthor.bsky.social

I'm currently reading one of his books, but his openings do exactly what I need. they shows me who the characters are and what they do.

His fantasy, Rescue from the Orc Fortress, is short, but it has a fun opening with holograms shooting arrows!
#SFFChat Q3: Name an author or a work that nails the opening!
January 8, 2026 at 11:56 PM
#SFFChat Q2:

Yes! It was just one chapter. By the time I get to Chapter 3, I usually know if I'm going to finish a story or not. The first sentence does not need to snag me.

Even books I'm not into and put down, I'll try to come back to later. Especially if I like the concept behind it.
#SFFChat Q2: If an opening doesn't immediately hook you, do you read on just in case? How long do you give a book?

Discuss!

#SFFChat Q1:

I'm not a ranter when it comes to other authors books. Talking about what I dislike is something I grew out of in my early 20's (Mostly...).

Beginnings I like showcase our protagonist(s) and their world. The actual story can start in chapter 2. I don't mind. Prologues are great!
#SFFChat Q1: What are your favourite & least favourite types of openings/beginnings?

Do you detest books that open with weather, travel, or someone staring into a mirror? What about books that open with introspection or with action?

Discuss!

Great news! I've not completely messed up being a mom! My kid just turned 5 and he's now half made of sugar.
