But perhaps how I 'should' structure a story is the wrong angle to approach from.
Rather 'what structure/s am I vibing with?' and 'does it serve the story well'?
Because everyone has a certain planning method and story structure that they seem to swear by and they're all different methods.
The deeper I get into looking at different ways of structuring a story, the more I'm like 'is structure even real anymore? what IS story structure' - and I have just a little bit of an existential crisis over how I should be structuring my stories.
Everyone has such a different way of doing it.

You hear amateurs complaining about how cell phones ruined a lot of their thriller plots, but truthfully THIS is what makes my job as a grimly hopeful science fiction author harder. "We got the information out to the public! Now everything will be okay!" is no longer in the optimistic ending toolbox
HOW IT WORKS IN MOVIES:

1. Government lies

2. Brave heroes release video showing the truth

3. Press says “the government is lying!”

HOW IT APPARENTLY WORKS IN REAL LIFE

1. Brave heroes release video showing the truth

2. Government lies

3. Press says “Oh no, what now? So confusing! So hard!”

So, I can finally release the NEWS!

My story "Always For Her Favor" will be included in the Flame Tree anthology Of Swords and Roses.

It's one of the most...indulgent...stories I've ever written - its literally a medieval chivalric romance complete with tournaments, favors, and - of course - lady

I'm loving the TOC too - Deborah L. Davitt? Sarina Dorie?

Can't wait to have the book in my hands, too...Flame Tree always makes such lovely books.

Someone said to me, "I'm sorry but I got your book from a library." Nobody should ever apologise for that. You read my book! That's brilliant! I grew up hanging out in libraries and the idea of a world without them fills me with dread. Without libraries, authors, like readers, will only suffer.

This is Bob 👋🙂

Bob is an English Bluebell, and his family have lived in our woodland for thousands of years

We know it’s Bob, as we marked his home with a small stick, so when he awoke again last week, we could compare with his photo from last year

Bob is handsome ☺️

Writing progress is weird. One day you write 1,000 words. The next day you delete 900, and somehow move forward.

Thread.
If you're a writer, wondering why you should bother writing with the world on fire. It feels like it's not important, I need you to understand that it is.

Even if it is just because it keeps you moving forward? Even if it only brings YOU joy, that gives you energy to fight & survive.

Writing Tip:
If you just want to entertain your audience, that's an excellent reason for writing. Not every writer needs to be some deep philosopher with hidden meanings in every line of text. Sometimes you can just write a story so that the reader has fun!

But the bigger reason that you should write and make art, is that your work is someone else's respite.

You don't know who they are. They may be someone in the future. But if you have escaped into a book, or a painting, or a TV show... Someone created that.

You can do that for someone else.
