Spring in the Weald of Kent by the Kentish artist Rowland Hilder
I love everything about it. The blossom on the trees, the long gone Elm trees, the horse and cart slowly moving through a hedgerow lined lane, the Oasts

Eynsford, the Kingdom of Kent - Rowland Hilder
The village & the artist are both special to me.
For twenty years I lived 30 yards from this scene. I met my wife in a pub 20 yards away, and my eldest son was christened in the church immediately behind where he sat to paint this

Use your senses to ‘learn’ woodland
Not for a minute, sit with your back against a tree for an hour
Become aware of things that weren’t seemingly there before, smells appearing from nowhere, feel leaf & branch debris on your face

Nothing to see here, just one of half a million Giant Redwoods in Britain
Of course it’s still a long trek to visit them in the wild, even in the Kingdom of Kent. This one is 20 yards off Tonbridge High Street 🥵🌲

The Ledyard Oak - Connecticut
A 400 year old white oak that was the largest in the state, & second largest in the country.
Sadly the tree died in 1969 after gypsy moth caterpillars ate all of its leaves, & the tree never recovered

Males are returning to their territories after moulting, whilst younger males are looking for their own
The young male that just landed on Bert’s fence, & then his favourite tree, has no idea he is opening the very gates of hell 😬🫣

Before the First World War the owners of the house and park used to take tea on the platform they built in this massive sweet chestnut, one of the oldest in the country

There is a distinct musty smell in Ancient English Woodland
It is up to 15,000 years of the dead, the dying, and those living off its legacy
It is the smell of history, and I live and breath it, just like our trees
