He glanced at his companions again, wondering if any of them had any clue - “You’re an ogre,” Gallara said dryly. The elder ogre hesitated, looking uncertain. “Well, yeah, but what about the riddle?” “It’s intentionally obtuse crap, and the only answer that makes any sense is that you’re an ogre. One who likes trick questions. Can we cross the bridge now?” The four ogres traded uncomfortable glances, their beady eyes bright with disbelief. Dad hung his shoulders and eventually said, “… no.”

This is a flash fiction I wrote on a whim last year. It's ... sad.
My mom was crying as I put my things in my green backpack: my game, my favorite shirt, my book about the squiggly aliens. She didn't know I was doing it. I would have told her, but I didn't want to bother her again. She said she shouldn't have hit me, but if she shouldn't have done it, she wouldn't have. I was the one who made her unhappy. Besides, she'd been drinking her grown-up stuff until she fell asleep; she would have tried to make me feel better instead of herself if I'd deserved it. So I left. I knew she'd be happier this way. I didn't know where I was going. As long as it was away from her, I could feel good about it. Well, I could feel better about myself. Better than I did. It got light after a while. I got hungry, and I got tired, but I kept going. I cried sometimes, even though my mom hated when I did that. And I knew that the farther away from her I got, the less I could bother her, so I kept going. When it got dark again, I was too tired to keep walking. I was too tired to move. I cried again, even though I shouldn't have. I was cold. So I sat down and curled up, and I hoped I would warm up soon. Instead, I just got colder and more tired. I hoped that if anyone found me, they wouldn't tell my mom.

It's hard to beat the Antarctic research complex in John Carpenter's The Thing. It creates a horrible sense of isolation, both from help and from humanity as a concept, and the cold keeps the scientists from escaping from the alien horror among them. What a great piece of horror.

In Prophecy #72, the MCs have to travel underground past a vast lake of magma. The ambient heat takes a toll on all of them. At least the magmaids swimming in the lake are friendly.

Seff and Drohim live in a relatively cold country, and the weather becomes a concern a few times. Seff's next story will probably take place at least partly in the winter in a major city, and snow and freezing temperatures will be an issue as she works to undermine a nasty conspiracy.

She disappeared on a Tuesday. Everyone knew about the creatures. They haunted gray skies and washed out light, only ever a shade or two darker than their surroundings. Docile things, never doing more than slithering through the gray and moaning on occasion. Right there in the periphery they played, and stayed. As long as you didn't look directly at them. If you did...well, you wouldn't remember after. Nor would any remember you. Unless they saw it take you. Like I did. I saw her run outside that day. On a cool gray evening, windy and washed of color. Didn't know her name, never will, but I knew why she did it. Why she looked directly at the biggest one, the thing taking up the sky. It wasn't the first cloudy day she'd done it and I can't say why they didn't take her on any other, but she was determined to be taken that time. I'd seen them take her son too, he weren't even looking at them but to a plane flying erratic through them. Big smoky hand broken the clouds and scooped him right up. Not a sound but her screaming at the window, running out to beg it to take her too. Got her husband a few seconds later, when he came out to scream with. But it left her. I saw it all... through a mirror. Not direct, see, good thing to keep in mind. She was alone all at once and they wouldn't take her. Nevermind how she stared right at them, how she cursed and flailed and stomped. Chased the clouds to keep on them even. Didn't matter. She wasn't wanted. Not until she was. Until she was desperate and starving, choking on sorrow. When she came with tears dry and heart shattered. I was on the porch, not watching them dance in the clouds and poke at trees through my little mirror when she fell out of her front door and stumbled down the steps to the walk. A dead thing she was, shambling slow and weak and still she filled with rage when she reached the asphalt. Bellowing up to the clouds. "Come down here and face me, you coward!" The biggest tilted the smoke gray of its silhouette, blinking empty eye holes as every other gathered close and tight, blotting out... everything. Dim and cold the world became, dim and cold and quiet. Not a bird, a car, a human voice or ethereal moan broke through their blackened bulk. My own breath came and went in utter quiet, body frozen to my deck chair. Its hand descended, wider than the street, longer than sense it devoured the neighborhood and filled my lungs with cinnamon smoke. Choking, soundless and still I could see but black on black on black. When it cleared she was gone, as were the clouds... Next they rolled in, no shadows brimming with shape and moaning haunted them. She disappeared on a Tuesday, taking the world as we'd known it with her, and no one remembers but me.

That makes four for her, and when one of you pulled out, she had three. How’s that?” Everyone laughed. “Actually,” Taraltos admitted, “that was pretty much the right answer. When I told her that, she blushed really hard and said she didn’t understand. So a few of us on the team decided to demonstrate.” “Holy crap, really?” Davik laughed. Taraltos nodded, taking another swig. “Then she blushed even harder and said that was acceptable, and flew away immediately. We just told the towns on both sides of the pass the answer to the riddle - after we all finished fucking each other - but no one ever saw the lion woman again.” “I love happy endings,” Grinks sighed, and wiggled her ass against Taraltos’ cock again. “Mmm, so do I. But I also love strong women, and part of me has always wanted to find her again and give her a fifth leg.” “I think I can guess which part of you that is!” Laylee laughed. “Let me know if she wants a sixth,” Davik added.

Gallara is certain that everyone will interpret everything she says and does in the worst way possible and hate her for it. The sections in her POV often use confrontational words for what other people say (snapped, accused, etc.) even when they're being nice.

How can I blame him for defending what’s exactly like my home?” She took off her knapsack. “Pellas, I want to give you an offering of peace and praise,” she said, and took out a handful of tiny, bright yellow flowers with triangular petals and the stems cut off. “It grows in my homelands, which I renounce in favor of your superior domain. Please accept my gift of reverence.” She walked over to Pellas and held out the flowers, while the overgrown sheep posed smugly; Gallara’s eyes widened. He took a few sniffs of the flowers, then opened his mouth and chomped the entire bunch out of her hands. “Mmm … marvelous,” he mumbled as he chewed and swallowed. “I accept your gift and your servitude. You have pleased me and gained my good graces. You may stay here with me; the rest of you, take this opportunity to leave in p- Ooh. Oooogh. Oh, shit …” Alakshi put a slobbery hand around the shuddering unicorn’s horn from the side, rested her other hand on her knife, and said nothing.
