I'm dealing with competing desires to play a video game (Final Fantasy V), a board game (Terraforming Mars), and a series of gamebooks (Lone Wolf - available for free at projectaon.org, by the way). I'm not sure if I should be proud of this level of nerdery, but I'm sure as hell not ashamed.

Laylee chuckled, finally releasing Taraltos, and staggered to her hooves. “C’mere,” she smiled, holding her arms out, and sat on a padded bench closer to her other friends. Davik and Grinks smiled at each other and ambled over. Laylee and Davik pulled each other into an eager kiss, full of sincerity and wandering hands. Taraltos, not far behind, sank onto the bench beside them as Grinks happily pounced into his arms to share a kiss of their own. All four of them leaned into each other, basking in the warmth and contentment they shared under the statue’s affectionate gaze.

Linkedin Post from a Pinterest designer reading: "Yesterday I was impacted by the Pinterest layoffs. I was Pinterest's only icon designer and product illustrator. In his email to the company, the CEO said "we’re doubling down on an AI-forward approach – prioritizing AI-focused roles, teams, and ways of working". I WAS working on AI projects including the Pinterest Assistant that soft-launched in October. If you haven't heard about that feature launch, you can find it on Pinterest's own newsroom or with a Google search. I was vocal internally about how our users don't want AI slop or features on the platform, how we as employees are feeling uncomfortable and discouraged about AI, and what I wanted from leadership. Last year, I told my manager I was worried about AI-based layoffs. I was told not to worry. At an onsite, we were told that "in the future", we would all be "managers of AIs". That I would be expected to manage some sort of AI employees, rather than craft and design my own work. Human-made art and design matter. I am never going to stop creating, even if the "home of inspiration" decides that creators are secondary to profits. I’ve never actually seen this plant before, and I don’t know how delicate it is or anything. And any other information you could give me about it, anything at all, would be great.” “This one knows how to treat plants, folks,” the dwarf said, smiling with approval. “Hang on while I get myself some shears.” A moment later, Alakshi watched while Gallara stared at the bushes up close like they were giving her the world’s biggest girl-boner. She and the farmer took snips and drips from every different part of the bushes for Gallara’s little jars, with Prax’s help, while the farmer said a bunch of stuff. Gallara wrote every word down in a little notebook, looking like her brain and her heart were both about to explode.

Mine
Queer, neurodiverse youths deal with enemies with unknown motives & goals, with epic fantasy backdrops.

The way characters are different is their crucial strength in confronting plot problems.

Make the reader FEEL.

The first one who comes to mind is Prophecies' Alakshi. I've always liked her, but the way she doesn't hide her emotions and is so direct with what she says wins me over. She's also cheerful whenever she can be and fiercely loyal.

Gallara grimaced. Well, yeah, she had a straight-bladed sword on her hip, but she’d only had basic combat training – and mostly with a pike – years ago when she’d done her mandatory military time. She’d bought both the sword and her plate-leather armor only a couple months ago, instead of the monograph about kenger bamboo that she’d been saving up for; her priorities had changed when a handful of goblins had decided an elf taking wild cuttings would be easy prey. She’d been in plenty of fistfights as a kid, and plenty in basic training – even a few at university – but the goblins had been her first life-or-death combat experience, and it was the first time she’d been seriously hurt.
