Because our government doesn't have explicit programs (yet) to systematically remove homeless people to die out of sight.
That said, that we allow this to happen when our country is so rich is its own form of depravity. I just think describing it as a uniquely American cultural norm is off base.

I've been to some countries where people live under military rule or autocracy. And without fail, one of the questions I get when they ask about life in the U.S. is whether it's true that Americans just let homeless people die on the street.

Last year when Nepal had their uprising, it *started* with non-violent protests and then the state massacred 20 of them. When the state loses its legitimacy to the people, that's when things happen.
It is a horrible thing but one of the *points* of non-violence is that state violence in response causes outrage to spread.

Also, may I say that I don’t agree with people saying ICE and CBP need “more training.” They’re doing exactly what this administration has trained them to—impose a reign of fear in blue cities. They don’t need more training. They need to be ripped up root and branch.

Unless you are taking us straight to Utopia you are engaging in incrementalism. Abolishing ICE today doesn't fix USAID, therefore it is not good enough!
