Hey, I'm Fergus! I don't think I ever did an introduction post, so here we go. I'm a British Narrative Designer/writer type who's been living in Copenhagen for nearly 4 years now.

Until recently I've mostly been working on my own interactive fiction stuff and game jams (mrfergusdoyle.itch.io )...

I always associate The Waste Land with a library copy I read at University where a previous scholar had annotated the line "Winter kept us warm" with "This is odd, winter is cold"
April is the cruelest month, but it’s January so we should be all good.

We are joined by @eclecticradical.bsky.social to discuss T.S. Eliot’s 1922 modernist masterpiece, “The Wasteland.”

We also discuss Eliot the guy…less of a masterpiece as a human being unfortunately.

I've been commissioned to write a piece about games based on real places that changed peoples' perception of that place or had some kind of local impact - are you a dev who made a game like this? Or are you a player who has a story about a game that inspired you to visit somewhere? Let me know!

Wait, people don't like the ending of Snow Crash? I know it's kinda pat but so are Gibson's (even if they have a bit more of a sting in them than Stephenson) but compared to the Diamond Age, I thought Snow Crash's ending worked pretty well

One year since I posted this. One year since everybody treated it like a joke. One year of watching my back. Tell me: have you seen much of Harry Styles this past year? Tim Davie's gone a bit quiet too, hasn't he?

And down with all kings but King Ludd!
The Luddites smashed machinery (like textile frames) because that machinery was robbing them of their livelihoods, much like generative AI does. The rich machine owners blocked factory workers from getting legal protections and got richer while workers got poorer. Sound familiar?

Not every AAA game needs to be 80+ hours long and take 7 years to make and sell ten million copies to hit “targets.” We don’t need to keep doing that.

The all-male sales team at an old job had the bright idea of pretending they'd hired a woman by making a fake LinkedIn account with a generated pfp. A few weeks later they sent us another photo. We assumed it was another fake, made fun of it, and then met her in person the next monday.
A new agency worker has been recruited at work... I've never actually seen her, but she does randomly pop up in the Teams chat to say things like 'Great productivity this week, team' and 'Love the positivity, team'.

I'm calling it.... She's AI. 😂
