The local beliefs are that the body contains several souls - with the head being the home of the conscious soul/self (a not uncommon real life belief system, where your conscious soul can wander while you sleep, and your body souls can be individually sickened or attacked - thus illness)

one of the things i really enjoy about these comics is the worldbuilding detail. the table could have been a flat thing with legs, but no: at a glance apparent how the slabs interlock and the curve of the uprights implies a style, vernacular karazithian or whatever. just a pleasure to look at.
