Yeah I am imagining that embalmers play an important part in all this, but at the end of the day the dead cannot heal, and must degrade!

I feel like even a well embalmed fella kept in a stable climate wouldn’t last too long if being used regularly for proper labour

huge thanks! Also just thinking along this same line - if you maintain your corpse properly, you could probably get a few years of simple labor out of it before it just falls apart, so you wouldnt even need to be executing tons of criminals to maintain a small cadre of automatons to do grunt work...

His attendant is a “penitent” - a criminal, ritually strangled, reanimated, and doomed to eternal labour (his conscious soul still trapped in his skull, according to local beliefs) (3/3)

Unlike the peasants outside the great city, all the residents of Karazad wear the wizard’s mask, to hide themselves from the vengeful spirits let loose by their rulers (2/3)

It was a bit too complicated to draw on a lazy Sunday, but I imagine penitents being common in jobs we would use machines for- grain mills, furnace bellows, treadmill powered cranes etc, maybe even turning a roasting spit for long hours…

The local beliefs are that the body contains several souls - with the head being the home of the conscious soul/self (a not uncommon real life belief system, where your conscious soul can wander while you sleep, and your body souls can be individually sickened or attacked - thus illness)
