The incredible thing is that those in charge of the US already have a world system that’s set up to treat them like special little birthday boys, and they’re apparently furious about it

I think maybe a lot of bad things could be avoided if the worlds most obvious crooks faced some sort of punishment other than “accumulating great sums of money and power”

When “Operation Raise the Colours” started attaching flags to lampposts, you couldn’t analyse it in the media without the reply, “it’s just people innocently expressing national pride”. Now the same people are travelling to France to intimidate refugees.

Pluribus reddit discourse is so funny. “Are we supposed to root for Carol” you are supposed to watch how her character interacts with the world “she’s very unlikable” wow that’s crazy can they do that

So I feel like the problem the UK is currently experiencing re: US relations is that if you keep on backing down in response to threats is that they can just deploy those threats again at literally no cost to themselves

neolithic guys get pissed if you tell them their cultures are organized by the type of pots and jewelry they made. "we called ourselves the blood hunters" "we conquered villages far beyond this horizon" sorry bud you're the western linear pottery culture now

Saw so much mistletoe from the train today! Not sure if it’s particularly prevalent in Jan, or it was just because the trees were otherwise bare and we were looking for it

BAGGER: (spilling my groceries on the floor) Oh God. I'm so sorry. This isn't what I'm supposed to do.

ME: How are you supposed to do it?

MANAGER: She means she was gonna be a fox. In the woods and shit. But something happened and she got stuck.

BAGGER: (crying) Got so stuck.

This photo was taken in 1911 using glass plate technology by Herbert Ponting who was part of Scott's Antarctic expedition,

The composition and detail are exquisite with the band of white snow/ice creating a perfect frame around the two people and the ship in the distance

Iconic imo

This "open borders" line is *infuriating* - these people came here to study or work, because they had a uni place or a job to come to. They paid visa fees, student fees, NHS surcharge - and many of them are doing challenging and important work - staffing our care homes, for example, including Mum's.
Starmer keeps using this line, & it's bonkers.

Most importantly, it's untrue: the party that ended Free Movement, ran the "hostile environment" & made Suella Braverman Home Sec did not run "an experiment in open borders".

It's also politically mad. Voters who believe this will not vote for Starmer

It's incredible the extent to which an unreliable statistic oscillating around zero is reported each month as if it actually means anything
This happens so often, yet it is still a thing that dominates and guides the news cycle. Governments and policies live and die on these minor fluctuations, which often prove to be inaccurate in any case.
