Why would people leaving behind all their possessions and going into an uncertain and potentially dangerous future want to bring easily transportable high value items? It is a mystery

This feels like a natural end point of decades of disingenuous talking points about how people who need state support shouldn't have phone or TVs or other things essential to their security and quality of life

“Maybe if we make people’s living conditions worse enough they’ll stop caring about their families being tortured”: a) no you won’t, b) that’s a terrible thing to try to achieve

I just don’t see how you can say you’re addressing fears about lack of integration while telling people they could be kicked out at any moment. As you say, it’s just performative cruelty to already traumatised people

And hey, maybe they’re fine with that, those are the choices they’ve made. But they don’t get to complain when that’s the eventual outcome for a chunk of the electorate
