An underrated factor in "why don't people in wealthy societies have more kids" is changing societal norms that now expect even older kids to be chaperoned by an adult any time they are in public, and to be chauffeured by a parent as their only means of transportation
Older generations spent a lot less time parenting. Millennial dads spend nearly as much time parenting as Boomer moms did. Millennial and Gen X moms way more.

I regret B.C.’s decision to end its decriminalization pilot and am disappointed the province has not released an independent evaluation. When governments change course on life-and-death issues, Canadians deserve to see the evidence. See more 👇

You would have thought it was Kissinger, but having the actual physical Nobel Peace Prize publicly bartered in exchange for a literal international war is the point at which we can say whatever Alfred Nobel had in mind has run its course and then some, time to pull the plug.

Fellas, have you ever considered how awesome it is to be Fred Schneider? Just think about it.

Wow.

Dang.

This is why there are so many covers of B-52s songs...yet not enough. People want a little taste of Fred, if just for a moment.

Thought @nytpitchbot.bsky.social had outdone itself, but no, it’s real: NYTimes sent four reporters to a town 150 miles from Minneapolis to interview a group of folks at the Ye Olde Pickle Factory bar while they drink beer at 10am and watch The Price Is Right and share deep political thoughts.

I have no idea how many 1,000 person group chats are going right now in Minnesota but there are a lot of them.

People who keep to themselves normally or to their small little group of friends and family are doing mutual aid like whoa. And hitting the streets together even in this cold.
People starting or joining neighborhood group chats for the first time and getting to know some neighbors for the first time. Others reactivating what they set up in 2020 if they let it go dormant.

Some of the stories in here are absolutely chilling. One US citizen of Somali descent was just riding an elevator with ICE agents and then they detained him for almost half an hour in the freezing cold despite him showing agents his passport card. They only let him go once protestors showed up.

Last year's arrest of Mahmoud Khalil was more than just a chilling act of political repression, it was an attack on all of our constitutional rights. Now, as the crackdown on pro-Palestinian free speech continues, Mahmoud is being threatened with rearrest. Mahmoud is free—and must remain free.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports.

And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.”

Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

At one point today, there were 283 Minnesota attorneys doing a training on how to file emergency habeas petitions to keep our neighbors from being shipped out of state and held indefinitely.

That would be the second largest law firm in the state. And that training was just put together this week.

begging people not to preemptively hand Trump powers he does not have and has no practical means of accomplishing

the scope of his actual abuses is quite bad enough on its own
the question to ask about this is, okay, he wants to cancel the midterms. how does he get the VA state board of elections to cancel the midterms? how does he get the georgia board of elections to do it? how does he convince republican house members to quit their jobs and give up their paychecks?
Trump says a lot of deranged shit, but, per this Reuters article — and the threats of invoking the Insurrection Act in Minnesota this morning — he is very clearly exploring how to cancel the midterms.

Just so people outside of MN know - a lot of the US citizens getting “arrested” by ICE never get processed at Whipple. They are roughed up during the arrest and then often dropped off miles from where they were picked up. It means we don’t know the true scale of what ICE is doing based on ICE stats
