NDP Member of Parliament for Courtenay-Alberni
Conservative MPs show up at rallies on Vancouver Island to spread fear, but when the Minister appears in Parliament and at committee, they stay silent. Coastal communities deserve facts and leadership. I’ll keep pressing for salmon funding, SAP transparency, and real action. 3/3

Uncertainty around the Salmon Allocation Policy has allowed misinformation to spread. Families will continue to fish, and salmon will remain a public resource. We deserve facts & transparency, not fear and confusion about something so vital to coastal communities. 2/3

Wild salmon are the lifeblood of our coast, central to food security, culture, and local economies. Yet the Pacific Salmon Strategy Initiative, the largest federal investment in salmon restoration, expires in March. Restoration work can’t be turned on and off like a tap. 1/3

Happy BC Family Day! Many families across Courtenay–Alberni will be cheering on Team Canada at the Winter Olympics. I recently met Meaghan Mikkelson in Ottawa and held her gold medal, an inspiring reminder for young athletes across Vancouver Island to dream big.

Today is Flag Day in Canada. Across Courtenay–Alberni, our maple leaf flies proudly. It is with us when we celebrate at the Olympics and Canada Day, and when we lower it to mourn tragedy or honour loss. It reminds us to care for one another. Happy Flag Day everyone!

Today I pressed the gov’t on the huge mental health gaps in small towns and rural Canada. Families travel hours or go without care. Bill C-201 would cover mental health under the Canada Health Act for just 1.5% of spending. Mental health is health. The time for action is now.

My heart is with Tumbler Ridge. As families grieve, we’re seeing harmful misinformation targeting the trans community. Facts matter, transgender people are far more likely to be victims than perpetrators. Tragedy should never be weaponized to divide us. Choose compassion and care over fear.

Like British Columbians everywhere, my heart is with the people of Tumbler Ridge today. This loss and trauma are heartbreaking. Please check in on one another and reach out for support. BC Mental Health Support Line: 310-6789 (24/7). We’re with you, Tumbler Ridge.

At “Ageing on the Hill,” I met the community groups helping seniors age at home with dignity. Nearly 10,000 nonprofits deliver meals, rides & visit, but they are stretched thin. I’m pushing for stable funding, elder-abuse protections & real caregiver support. Seniors deserve action, not words.

Met last week with leaders from the Canadian Federation of Nurses Unions, representing 250,000 nurses nationwide. With health care under threat, we’re working together to stop privatization, end workplace violence, secure safe staffing, advance Indigenous health equity, and deliver pharmacare.

I rose in the House to table a petition calling for urgent federal leadership on brain injury awareness, prevention and treatment. 1.6M Canadians live with brain injury, yet there’s no national strategy. It’s time to change that.
MP Johns: 1.6 million Canadians live with a brain injury, so we need a coordinated federal response

Spoke with The Hill Times about “Heated Rivalries” & hockey culture. Stories can open hearts in ways policy can’t. If this series helps queer players feel seen, safe & welcome in the game, that’s a win for hockey and for Canada. Inclusion is the future of our sport. #HockeyForEveryone

Two of my most favourite MPs in the same place.
@gordjohns.bsky.social is one of the most hardest working MPs I have ever met. The fact that he is lining up with @heathermcpherson.bsky.social doesn't surprise me.
They show up and do the heavy lifting for democracy.

Families feel it at checkout. Grocery prices keep climbing while big chains post record profits. That’s not inflation, it’s profiteering. I told the Finance Minister that photo-op meetings with CEOs won’t lower prices. We need action, including an excess-profits tax. Put people first.

Proud to endorse Heather McPherson for NDP leader. One of only 7 of us re-elected, she knows how to win tough fights. We need a leader with a seat in the House, ready to rebuild, regain status, and fight for working people. I’m with Heather. #NDP #cdnpoli #Leadership #WorkingPeople

Swastikas and slurs on the orange bridge in Port Alberni weren’t “vandalism” — they were attacks on Survivors and truth. I asked all MPs to stand with Tseshaht First Nation. Thank you to the volunteers who restored it. Hate has no home here.

Farmers deserve straight answers, not loopholes. Ottawa must scrap changes forcing growers to buy seed every year and protect the right to save seed. I stand with the National Farmers Union: farmers’ rights, public breeding, and food security matter. Time for real action. youtu.be/XZzCFjUIvtc

Back in the House tonight to force a debate as Crofton mill layoffs begin. Crofton workers are emptying lockers and families are losing paycheques. They deserve better. Ottawa must step up now with bridge supports, fast EI, and a real plan for workers who have paid in for decades.

Met with Fire Chiefs leaders Ken McMullen and Tina Saryeddine. Canada isn’t ready for the emergencies ahead—wildfires, floods, earthquakes and more. Fire Chiefs are all-hazards experts. I’ve tabled legislation to put them at the centre of federal planning. Time to listen and act.
