Dozens of these wild apples lie amongst nettles beneath the tree. They range in colour from green, to red and yellow. Crab apples can vary enormously. Although they are the wild ancestors of our commercial apples (a species that varies enormously in its own right), many trees you come across in the wild have grown from domestic apples that have self-seeded, and either reverted to a wild form or crossed with true crabs. The closer they are to the domestic parents, the larger and sweeter their fruit will be. The crab apple is one of the few host trees to the parasitic mistletoe, Viscum album, and trees are often covered in lichens. While domesticated apple (of which there are more than 6,000 varieties), originated in Central Asia where its wild ancestor, Malus sieversii, is still found today, our native crab apple also contributed to the genetic makeup of the species as domesticated apples were traded and spread throughout Europe.

An old stone building which stands with it's foundations in the water of the harbour. Between the two blocks that make up the building a red and white dingy hangs from a boom arm. The name "Lodberries" comes from the Old Norse word hladberg, meaning a landing rock, as the buildings were historically used as waterfront stores. It is one of Shetland's oldest buildings still in use, dating back to the 17th century.

TV Programme….
Robin Hood.
My painting is a line and wash watercolour. One local legend has it that Robin Hood came to the bay and fought French pirates giving their pirate hoard to the poor. Robin Hood’s Bay is a historic and very attractive fishing village, with steep cliffs, winding narrow streets, little fishermen’s cottages and of course the beautiful sea.

A colour photograph in landscape format. It looks monochrome, but is actually colour, but on a grey cloudy day without contrast. The view is up at a lampost with decorative metalwork. In the arch formed by the horizontal bar is a depiction of a windmill, with the sea behind and pebbles below. A row of pairs of leaves decorates the lower arch. Simple but a very nice way to recognise the building nearby.
