Photo taken at The New Forest ~ Hampshire UK The Dartford warbler is a small, shy, long-tailed bird, roughly the size of a wren (12-13 cm), with a slate-grey back and a distinct, deep wine-red breast. Often seen perched on gorse bushes, they have a prominent long tail usually held upright at a jaunty angle and a noticeable red eye-ring.

In the middle of the picture in the shade is a fallen tree resting in the shallow blue waters of the tarn. There are ducks standing on the tree trunk and some in the water close to the tree. The sky above is hazy blue. It is reflected in the still waters of the tarn, as is the fallen tree. There are a few light ripples on the water, some from the movement of the ducks. Talkin Tarn is a kettle-hole lake formed by the immense force of glaciers 18,000 years ago. Moving ice scoured and carved the landscape leaving glacial sand hills and a natural bowl, which filled with water as the ice sheet melted. The name Talkin is derived from the Celtic 'Talcan' meaning brow of a hill. The word 'Tarn' is Norse in origin, 'Tjorn' meaning tear drop or small lake.
