El petirrojo europeo (Erithacus rubecula), camina sobre la superficie helada de la charca sin aparente problema , ya que siente el frío de forma diferente a los humanos . Tienen varias adaptaciones muy eficaces . 1. Sistema de intercambio de calor. En las patas. Las arterias ( sangre caliente que baja desde el cuerpo )pasan muy cerca de las venas( sangre fría que regresa ) Así la sangre que baja , se enfría antes de llegar al pie, y la que sube se calienta . 2. Patas con pocos nervios y sin músculos. Las patas están formadas sobre todo por tendones, huesos y escamas . Tienen menos terminaciones nerviosas, así que la sensación de frío es limitada . 3. Temperatura más fría en las patas . Mantener las patas frías reduce la diferencia de temperatura con el hielo, evitando una gran pérdida de calor.
