This is true, beautiful, and exceptional and it’s time any elected official worthy of public trust started acting like it.
We are *all* Real America in the same way a naturalized citizen who took his oath five seconds ago is exactly as much of a citizen as someone whose ancestors came over on the Mayflower.
Another good practice for the New Year would be for all the non-fascists in America who want to opine about politics to really begin believing that urban America is Real America & that its denizens are The Authentic People. Get some self-respect & drop the volkish nationalist view that they're not

Last of fish & grits aside, im glad i grew up w this tradition, i just wish our churches ever talked about this history!
I typically dont go to Watch Night, but it's always something I have to acknowledge. Tonight is the 163rd anniversary of the first Watch Night. As some 3million+ Black folks enslaved in the Confederacy waited up all night December 31, 1862 for the Emancipation Proclaimation to take effect

I keep seeing this reposted but you guys: it’s not one person. There are probably 10 people with integral roles in that process. Anyone at DHS OPA can be assumed to have a hand. Let’s stop assuming mastermindery and start assuming org-chart alignment.
It is kind of wild that no big media outlet has busted open the story of who is making DHS' posts on X. Whoever that may be is certainly plugged into hardcore white supremacist internet propaganda with a harder edge. "Groyper" would be underselling it. This is Daily Stormer-tier sludge.

But I'm stubborn as those garbage bags that time cannot decay.

I'm junk, but I'm still holding up this little wild bouquet.

Fascinating bit of history in this thread
The retirement of the MetroCard at midnight tonight is bittersweet for me. In 1983, as a young lawyer, I took a year's leave of absence from my law firm to serve as special counsel to Richard Ravitch, chairman of the NY MTA. He gave me the task of leading a study ...
It's the final day of MetroCard sales—so as we say farewell to an icon, let's take a look at how it all started.

Thank you, MetroCard, for moving New York to the very last swipe.

My worst was also my best (it netted me a husband...):

We were at a mutual friend's wedding. DJ asked for all couples to come to the dance floor. He asked if we should dance. I asked, "are we a couple?" He said, "we could be..."

It's been 23+ years.

When I was digging around for those CDs, I found a mixtape I made for myself when I was in my early 20s.

Lest you think my mood was always this wistful, I also made a one of more raucous songs. But I can’t find that one.

i really wish the past year has made people reassociate about a lot of things, but tech is definitely one.
a serious question is - do we have a choice. at this point, tech is top-down, opt-out. very far cry from the pc and internet revolutions. it feels like we lost a war.
If this year was about getting off US tech, 2026 is the year to reassess the digital revolution — what works, what doesn’t; what to keep, and what to reject.

I’ve only just started to consider what needs to change about how I use digital technology, but I’m excited to learn more next year.
We need to reassess our relationship to digital tech
Getting off US tech led me to a wider questioning of digital convenience
