On deck for Monday’s episode of PTI: a convo with @jamesrball.com about the rapid rise and fall of“anti-disinformation” as a distinct line of research and journalism.

What lessons can we learn and where do we go now that institutions have all but given up?

every reporter who covers AI should paste their latest piece into it and ask it to tell them if it’s good, and then when it offers obsequious praise, change the prompt to “tear it to shreds,” in order to understand on a personal level that it has no viewpoint and just responds to the prompt
It’s also time to start wondering if some of these reporters are a little cooked by the bots themselves. Reporters aren’t inured to chatbot psychosis. In fact, some of them may have drank too much of the kool aid from sources selling them stuff. We’re in a new world of stupid. Adjust your credulity.

Also, when reporters start talking about the chatbots this way, it is imperative to remind them they are basically asking a toaster for comment. They should be a lot more embarrassed about this than they currently are.

“Grok told CNN…” no it didn’t. You typed stuff into an unreliable calculator.

Last year some friends and I jumped into Electrical Audio studios in Chicago for three days of straight improvisation. No plans, no-retakes, no specific goal.

This record is what came out of the second day's session. It's weird, it's psychedelic, and it's a trip.

the thing that strikes me about the Grok "apology" thing is that even those of us who are against "AI" as it is marketed to us have trouble not falling into the basic fallacy that they are trying to sell us, i.e. There's A Little Guy In There

One last fucked up 2025 scoop—FEMA has begun issuing termination notices to CORE staff (appointed under the Stafford Act, ordinarily extended for 2 years) effective Jan 2, agency sources tell me. Sr leadership was asked if they could be given more notice but Acting Administrator Karen Evans said no.

It is kind of wild that no big media outlet has busted open the story of who is making DHS' posts on X. Whoever that may be is certainly plugged into hardcore white supremacist internet propaganda with a harder edge. "Groyper" would be underselling it. This is Daily Stormer-tier sludge.

This ICE post is a reference to a Rhodesian Army recruiting poster ("Be A Man Among Men") that's very popular with white supremacists.

DHS now says it's aiming for 100 million deportations. In an amazing coincidence, there are 104 million Black and Hispanic people living in the U.S. right now.

“Self-deport” is a whitewashed way to describe “fleeing the country under the threat of state violence.” I agree with Maria here — it’s important to call that exactly what it is.
What. No.

Don't use their language, @newyorker.com that is not even a real word. What the hell is wrong with "flee" or like. "Flee this godforsaken country"

Matt Taibbi incessantly posting about his *very serious and not frivolous* lawsuit against @eoinhiggins.bsky.social over art on his book cover should tell you how nonsense his claims are. If he had a good lawyer and a real case, he’d know its “shut the hell up” o’clock until the matter resolves.

You would believe from reading this Matt Taibbi tweet that @eoinhiggins.bsky.social’s book is about him or that it names him on the cover. No.

The book spends more time on Glenn Greenwald. The cover suggests a general phenomenon in our culture — that everyone online has seen.

What is the actual plan for this? AI magically starts producing new industries that don’t exist in the next three months? The unemployed who have never done construction work start doing construction work? Nothing is pointing in this direction, except for elite spending on tennis seats and gambling.

This thought has been lingering in my head for a while but this tweet prompted me to write it out.
