There are two types of people in this world:

People who immediately sang this to themselves to check

and

Liars
Let this also serve as your annual reminder that “War Pigs“ can be sung to the tune of Deck the Halls, and vice versa. (“Generals gathered in their masses / fà la la la la, la la la la, just like witches at black masses / fa la la etc”)
On the subject of Christmas songs: a newsletter containing 3 tunes I come back to this time of year, and some "yes I am once again on my bullshit / re-reading Hogfather" thoughts about the season

Great thread, and I love this eminently actionable suggestion.
The only real way is to formally require divulging any degree of AI usage, in much the same way that we all already declare in contracts that out work is original. Plagiarists will simply lie here, but at least there are consequences when they're caught later. Establish those consequences as norms.

Good thread
There are many people who simply do not understand the stakes and either understate or overstate them. The issue is not that AI will replace writers or w/e: it can't. The issue is that AI will make our working conditions significantly worse and harm the development of new artists in our fields.

This thread sounds like something from The Craft series by @maxgladstone.bsky.social
The economy is a paranormal entity that our greatest dimensional scholars (macroeconomists) understand only superficially. They have induced a variety of changes in it by manipulating arcane forces like "money supply" with some success. But it remains protean and unpredictable.

my personal 'favorite' is, "this isn't actually a new feature but Investor #3 really wants to see AI in the product and this feature used some hacked-together vintage 2012 ML implementation and he's never gonna know"
love that software developers are advertising AI functionality in every single app now and it's up to you to try to figure out if they mean "this has spellcheck" or "everything you create in this app will sync in real-time to sam altman's personal laptop" or something in between

This, along with Kurtis Blow's "Christmas Rappin'" was new to me this year on a Tidal "1970s Christmas Music" playlist, and I'd like to thank whoever put that together
Every year it's "Paul McCartney this" and "John Lennon that" which distracts from the true reason for the season: The Kinks' perfect Christmas Song about youths jumping Santa youtu.be/fPPCPqDINEk?...

Are from eternity, and shall not fail.
Bear them we can, and if we can we must.
Shoulder the sky, my lad, and drink your ale."

So we’re still in the process of getting estimates but it’s beginning to look like getting the house foundation fixed is going to run upwards of $100k

So uh

We’ll be okay, we’ll figure it out, but I do have a sexy horror book you can preorder lol
Attention, horny weirdos! We are publishing @dynamicsymmetry.bsky.social's WITNESS MARKS next year and we are very, very excited to finally have a reason to talk about exorcism bondage. All webstore pre-orders come w/ a signed bookplate from the author. Get it here: ghoulish.rip/product/witn...

So much this! For years, I was too intimidated to try bullet journaling because I thought bujos had to be impressively artistic. They really don't! Thank goodness.
I don't know EXACTLY who needs to hear this but I know it's at least some folks who do daily planners: your planner doesn't need to be fancy! It doesn't need fancy stencils, multicolor artwork, stickers, or washi tape.

All your planner actually needs to do is work for you.

@hiddenschools.bsky.social Do you think the Church of Kos has its own brand of cigarettes? I can't stop thinking about Abelard buying smokes: what brand? filtered?

For some reason, I imagine he smokes Red Apples. The brand Tarantino created for his movie universe.

Re gender affirming care for youth: They will come for the haircuts and the clothes next. And it won’t stop with kids or trans people. And I’ve been telling people this for a decade and now here we are with lots of cis people shrugging and saying it’s unfortunate. How are you going to save a life?

i was reading this at the bus stop and having complicated feelings about it, and the bus came and i got on and sat down and i noticed the guy next to me was watching tiktok (you know, like everyone on the bus), and i glanced over, and it was a jamelle bouie video

so ok universe you win this time
i have said this before but if you are actually interested in influencing people beyond a narrow circle of too-online journalists you will be making direct to camera videos on tiktok, instagram and youtube. if you primarily post on text-based social media then you're just dicking around.

Just so I'm clear on this, computer memory has tripled in price because a bunch of it that hasn't been produced yet has been ordered to populate GPUs that aren't installed in data centers that aren't built yet in order to service a demand that doesn't exist to make profits that don't happen.
