All the "iraq war mea culpas" were like this. Ooohh your intellectual journey is soooo fascinating. Did you need 10,000 words to write about how you got it wrong because the left can never be right???? Should we clap for your big brain??????
what is the point of this type of article construction? “i refused to see the truth but recently i did and i needed to write about it”? nobody wants this

When officials like Walz respond to regime atrocities by warning people not to react with violence, which is infuriating to hear when the blood of nonviolent observers hasn't yet been washed away, this is what they're warning about.
MAGA ideology is fundamentally, unavoidably invested in the notion that if the shackles of 'woke' and the 'leftist cultural apparatus' ('the cathedral') are thrown off, the 'authentic,' many and powerful MAGA majority will emerge - and so they seek the clarifying spasm of violence to produce that.

I have a whole thesis on the governing ethos of the Times and similar as 'weakly held liberalism' - people immersed in a liberal social context without any genuine belief or principle backing it up, who thus idealize conservatism as authentic and strong.
I honestly think a lot of it is that the NYT crowd really are the 'coastal elites' everyone complains about, so they went to find the Minnesota working class they expected: old, white and racist.

It never occurred to them to look for communities that didn't look like that.

Could a Democrat, any Democrat, release a statement actually thanking the people that have been out there doing the fucking work instead of this constant scolding tone for the love of God
Respectfully, look at this fucking bullshit that we’re dealing with, not a single person here has “taken the bait.” We have born witness as little kids are used as bait and neighbors are kidnapped on our streets. A mad dipshit is going to invoke the Insurrection Act regardless and you are blaming us
Violence only helps Trump & may provide him an excuse to further trample our rights by invoking the Insurrection Act.

I love how Dems always manage to fuck up the framing.

"Tagged as anti-law enforcement"?

Easy layup of a counterpoint: this isn't law enforcement. It's domestic terrorism. It's thuggery masquerading as law enforcement. Real law enforcement is railing against this.

See? Easy.

Another way of looking at this is: the Libs couldn’t believe their luck when the right went apeshit - their moment to take over sole management! Except the business was broke, in huge debt, had no customers and the right correctly concluded it was time to burn the joint out, under mafia rules.

This is the most astonishing graph of what the Trump regime has done to US science. They have destroyed the federal science workforce across the board. The negative impacts on Americans will be felt for generations, and the US might never be the same again.

Mamdani's quote about "ending mediocrity" from his acceptance speech is something i think about often. he's not just talking about crybullying racist right wingers, but the mealy-mouthed, cowardly professional class that is forever unwilling to take a moral stand and has helped push to this moment
Mamdani: "I am in support of abolishing ICE. What we see is an entity that has no interest in fulfilling its stated reason to exist. We're seeing a government agency that is supposed to be enforcing some kind of immigration law, but instead what it's doing is terrorizing people."

Honestly wondering, in light of across-the-board antipathy toward the Greenland nonsense, whether we might enter an Articles of Confederation moment — in which events impossible under a good-faith reading of the Constitution make plain that our governing arrangements are no longer fit for purpose.
It is not normal for a president to be pushing for a net -80 policy. That Trump apparently does not care about the public opinion on Greenland (or maybe he doesn't know about the polls) is a sign of how far we have drifted from normal democratic government

I've increasingly come to view cynicism as the seedbed of totalitarianism, both because it can paralyze the opposition and because it implicitly validates the might-makes-right ethic of the authoritarian.
i have been reading Tom Ricks’ “Fighting the Good War” which is a military analysis of the civil rights movement, and one thing that comes abundantly across is that movement leaders and ordinary people made it a practice to refuse to fall into despair and cynicism.
