Canceling Stephen Colbert Isn’t Funny www.nytimes.com/2025/07/18/o... Thanks @mollyjongfast.bsky.social for reminding us that we all have to fight, every day, to protect our freedoms and to stand against the advancing authoritarianism in America. The Colbert episode is just a sad example.

To the people who for some reason come and give me basic writing advice:

My first published novel came out in 2005 (was the 5th novel I wrote). I have since had over 20 novels published. Many short stories, comics, journalist pieces, a memoir, written screenplays (including…

Parents insist their kids go to college to get business degrees. Administrators respond by defunding the humanities and social sciences, while hiring business profs at ~2X what historians get paid. Meanwhile, businesses say over and over that they want to hire humanities and social science majors.
Decades of mechanistic talk about university degrees as if they were bundles of 'skills' and 'prep' are about to be proved completely wrong (obviously). Want to get a real boost? Do History or English.

When The U.S. Government Tried To Replace Migrant Farmworkers With High Schoolers
In 1964, a program that brought migrant Mexican laborers to the U.S. ended. So the U.S. recruited American students to pick crops instead. When they saw their living conditions, strikes ensued.

inspired by this amazing student reporting on the UVA Board of Visitors and how it's a political board, filled with groupthink, I decided to have a look at Virginia Tech!

A dive into the Board of Visitors’ political donations
Here is a look at Board members’ political donations — all but one of whom has records of political donations which are overwhelmingly to Republican candidates and campaigns.

AI is going to kills us, but not because of AI. It will be because of the humans that will pass the keys and say, "here, you drive."

It is not done yet, put it back in the oven.

Been sacrificing folks since 1636 both on- & off-campus—all in the name & brand of the institution.

As a mentor once lamented: your degrees & pubs won’t save you, only the community will. Commit to, don’t neglect them or you’ll perish. (Definitely discussed how you can publish & (not or) perish.)
I know these institutions cannot love us. But doggone the way they will sacrifice you to save themselves is something that still takes my breath away.

One of you multi millionaires who doesn't like the current system should pony up the $5mill for that Gold Citizenship on behalf of Abrego. I mean, if we are gonna have a constitutional crisis, let's make it TV worthy.

If an obscure scientist in a tiny foreign land likes a No Kings post and flies to the U.S. 8 months later for a professional conference, they will be denied entry and detained. But if you assassinate a Democratic lawmaker in the Midwest, you can apparently disappear without a trace.

I point this out because the civility norms have ALWAYS been shit. They have ALWAYS been composed of lies.

The people you were told were angry and dangerous rarely were. There is no way to respectability yourself out of this.

Or even better learn other languages solely so you (we) can be more welcoming to others even before they move to this country. The attack on modern language education is part of this orchestrated movement.
Fund EFL classes, if you’re so worried that migrants can’t integrate!!!
Like if you’re worried so much about this becoming an island of strangers, how about you make policies that promote and aid integration rather than just repeatedly shouting “YOU DONT BELONG HERE” at immigrants and charging them through the nose for it

While I was at NSF, we weren't allowed to accept anything more than a coffee + pastry as it would be considered a conflict of interest. I was invited to give a short talk at a meeting sponsored by NSF that included lunch and I had to go grab a sandwich across the street to keep things clear.
