One of the biggest problems with British journalism is that nobody really asks the writers follow up questions. For example, an editor who wasn’t a 20 year old freelancer could have asked Ed, “what about the non white people also born after the year 2000?”
No surprise that Ed West thinks you have to be white for London to be "your city", but still shocking that the *London* Standard prints this stuff.

If the suggestion was inadvertent, its likely because the topic is being shoehorned into some intra-left beef where it doesn't belong.
