I’ve been reporting about the potential connection of tariffs to small biz job losses. Scott Lincicome of Cato offers this piece discussing not just the high level of the tariffs, but the “truly insane complexity” whose “overall economic cost is likely staggering. “

Welcome to Tariff Complexity Hell
Complexity is a tax, and today U.S. companies are paying through the nose.

try guessing before you click what technology is being described here
Seriously though, Steve Jobs said it was "as big a deal as the PC", and future cities would be designed around it, and John Doerr (another tech billionaire) said it it would be MORE important than the internet.

One thing I always want to ask these masculinity entrepreneurs is why men can’t look to women as role models, and can’t see in women models of human virtue and thriving that are worth emulating. After all, women look to men for these all the time.

My wife was sexually harassed by Miles Hewstone as a phd student. He was still asked to review her (and other women he harassed) for jobs and promotions. This is so fucked up.

Thankfully, she and many other women testified against him and something was finally done. This is her take on his case:

If you were to look at how organizations spend their time and training budgets, I don't think you'd ever guess that explicit racist attitudes mattered 18x more in predicting actual behaviour than implicit bias
Implicit racial attitudes accounted for ~2.5% of variance in behavior beyond explicit racial attitudes, an effect size that was *just* over our agreed upon threshold for what would constitute a practically significant effect. Explicit racial attitudes still explained much more variance (~45%).

If you want to stop something, require complicated, risky, political and bureaucratic processes for approving it

Universities are dispositionally vulnerable to this move
Absolutely. I gave a guest lecture for her class a few weeks ago, and we decided to run the section on trans experiences by the department chair… I think I would have just… not been able to talk about it at all if I were giving it this month.

Fascists are waging a brutal campaign against universities and their employees—and rather than defend themselves and the people they depend on, universities are throwing them to the wolves. They’re risking liability and their own survival—and rewarding the wolves. Stupid. Short-sighted. Heartless.

Look, every single “deal” reached by a university with the Trump administration is a moral stain that will be seen with deep embarrassment once we’re through this. But for Northwestern to do this now, when the administration is visibly weakened, is even more shameful and inexcusable.
