I often think about how the government hounded Aaron Swartz to death for scraping Jstor, yet all these AI companies scraped almost literally all of human knowledge (and continue to do so even when they're told to stop) and have had no criminal consequences.

virtue signalling is good actually
Performative decency is actually *so* important for this reason.

It tricks the 10% of ghouls into thinking that there are only 1% of ghouls.

And it makes the 30% of people that don't care one way or another follow the mostly decent crowd

Can Elon please, please speed up his Mars colonization project and bring Gad along with him?
I helped make a film, out this week, called “Rovina’s Choice,” about the deaths this man without conscience or accountability has caused — already 600,000, ⅔ of them children.

If I had a nickel for every time the Bloc wound up leading the Opposition because the Tories fucked it up, I'd have two nickels. Which isn't a lot, but it's weird that it happened twice.

I'll tell you something. I have a private theory that this kind of division (which is clear as day to ppl in tech and like, baffling to ppl outside of it) is a version of the "I will help you survive but not thrive" phenomenon but worked out re: tech belonging

...It really seems like everyone leading an organization of any size should be aware that there's legal risk in telling a class of interns to "go out and seek marriage," without a lawyer having to tell them
Reporting this story, I heard near universal concern from Heritage staff of discrimination against unmarried women.

Then I obtained a letter to the Heritage board from anonymous staffers that alleged the same thing — and more.

Heritage is aware that alleged behavior could create legal trouble.

The Musk pay package proposal would make his comp contingent on hitting 20M vehicles sold.

That's $50,000 in compensation for each Tesla ever sold (they make a gross profit of $8k per vehicle sold).

Or, if we just look forward (since they've already sold about 8M vehicles), that's $83k pay/car
