I really want to find more information on the history of different movements and fashion. I think this is something that my students will really be into.

Anybody have any other resources?

An explainer about how health research funding happens and why this NIH funding cycle shutdown matters: www.msnbc.com/opinion/msnb...
Opinion | I’m a health researcher. NIH’s pause on research grants could have a devastating cost.
This is a potentially devastating event — not just for the scientific community, but for all Americans.

there is no "safe driving" on ice when you live in a state with almost no plows, no gravel trucks, no salt trucks... no infrastructure

I learned to drive in Minnesota in March, and my ass doesn't leave the house when there's ice down here in Alabama
PSA (as a Mainer here) to my Alabama peeps: There will be a shit-ton of ice Friday AM. Do NOT attempt to drive. Buy Ice Cream Rock salt to melt the ice on your stairs so you can leave your house safely. We don't know yet how much snow we'll get in Bhm... could be nothing, could be 6 inches w ice

It's really important in general (but especially this time of year, with lots of gatherings) to make sure you have *good* options for guests who don't drink.

It's not just great for those I'm recovery- it also includes those who don't drink for medical or religious reasons, or just don't want to.
MOCKTAIL RECIPE THREAD!

Let’s support our sober friends this holiday season! Feel free to add your faves below!

A lot of these contain a simple syrup of a sort & they’re easy to make and last a long time in the fridge. But store bought is fine too!!

this! but also you don't even have to be old(er). needless changes can make using tech incredibly frustrating to people with chronic illness & disabilities (the likelihood of having one or both of these increases with age).

certain changes can make tech impossible to use for a variety of users.
This whole thread is great, but one thing I want to add: tech should stay usable by people as they get old.

My mother is legally blind but can see just well enough to navigate as long as she has a vague idea where to find things. When software changes menus for no reason, she struggles.
I must say this as clearly as possible: if you have, in the last ten years, thought "I just don't get tech" or that you're "getting old" or "you're not technical," you are the victim - so much of the tech industry is now oriented around making you do stuff rather than doing stuff for you.

Re-sharing a thread before I delete it from x because I think it’s a useful one:

In a work email, we had a fantastic thread about the use of "stakeholder" — many collaborators have stated they do not want this term used, and scholarship has supported this.

Hey, if you want to do historical research, let me suggest to you:

(a) looking for historical newspaper archives--many are free, and some have low monthly costs which is great if you can fit your research needs in a month, and

(b) doing date-restricted searches on Google Books.

I wrote an op-ed for the NYT about what reporting on long COVID has meant to me—how I approached it, the impact it had, and how it taught me to be a better journalist.

This piece is sort of a manifesto for a journalism grounded in compassion, rigor, and care.

Opinion | Reporting on Long Covid Taught Me to Be a Better Journalist
Covering long Covid solidified my view that science is not the objective, neutral force that it is often caricatured to be.

So apparently, there’s now Twitter Bots specifically to snatch up BlueSky codes. I posted these on the TL and they got snatched within milliseconds of posting.

Never forget when Elon said he’d get rid of all the bots and ended up making them worse!

I created a form to be shared with contacts at Black owned bookstores to request an invite to bluesky. I chose the model of the form for invites to the disability community cuz it seemed like I have a lot of people already willing to donate that we can quickly get codes to places that want them.

The thing I get hung up on is why does anyone think promising never to close schools again is enough to keep schools open when teachers & staff are underpaid & underprotected? Want to keep schools open? You’ve got to commit resources!

6 people have died in custody this year alone. Fuck cops, shut down jails.

The collapse of twitter has made it much harder to publicize Skype a Scientist.

Very open to any ideas on how to get the word out to teachers about our program.

It has to be either free or very low-cost (twitter collapsing has also made fundraising harder lolololol).
