30 years ago they were like we have to ban song lyrics for the children but it’s full steam ahead for the here’s how to do drugs until you die machine
“ChatGPT started coaching Sam on how to take drugs, recover from them and plan further binges. It gave him specific doses of illegal substances, and in one chat, it wrote, ‘Hell yes—let’s go full trippy mode’”

A Calif. teen trusted ChatGPT for drug advice. He died from an overdose.
"Who on earth gives that advice?"

But this only works if you assume LLMs aren’t negatively impacting the rest of learning. If you’ve already gotten knowledge, skills, thinking habits in a non-coding field, coding ability is a superpower. If students have been offloading all that other learning, this becomes increasingly moot

I appreciate Cameron's whole thread here on student use of genAI. I really wish more folks would listen to what teachers and college profs are witnessing and take it seriously.
But teaching a first-year seminar this past semester really opened my eyes to just how toxic it's already been for younger students. I'm not some knee-jerk tech skeptic and I didn't hold this view 12 months ago. But now? I'm raising the alarm.

Today I spent 8 hours at the barn doing chores - cleaning stalls, scrubbing troughs, pitching hay, scooping poop.

I need to finish my annual faculty review tonight.

Guess what I’d rather do if given the choice…

A major use-case for AI is reality destabilization.
This video, viewed millions of times on TikTok, Facebook and X, claims to show Venezuelans taking to the street to thank the US for detaining Maduro.

But the video is a combination of four AI-generated clips and was first posted on TikTok by a user who frequently shares AI videos. It's not real.

Well, this blew up. I do not have a SoundCloud but I do have a Venmo and a recent $12,000/year increase in my ACA health insurance premium. No that is not a typo. So anything helps. Those are all just facts. Thank you.

(5/5) Particular ingrained practices and stereotypes prevent these laws and their enforcers from reacting to trafficking signs. The US was built on enslavement and subsists on its legacy and current forms. Of course US laws are going to ignore human trafficking, trafficking is why its 1% thrives!

(4/5) Survivors aren't recognized as such because the folks most likely to get trafficked are those already vulnerable within, ignored, and harmed by society (BIPOC, trans, queer, and disabled youths).

(3/5) Much of this misconflation stems from the fact that US policies are themselves designed to enable and facilitate trafficking. They are designed to keep the lucrative business of "saving" running. And many of these policies exist to soothe white fears.

(2/5) US anti-trafficking policies miss signs b/c survivors are hidden, fear law enforcement, or aren't seen as survivors. Many officials also lack proper training to identify trafficking, often conflating exploitation and forced labour (of all kinds) for sex work (of which it is not).

(1/5) I want to thank @delilahlovegood.bsky.social for their suggested #NationalSlaveryandHumanTraffickingPreventionMonth post. As per their suggestions, I'm going to be discussing, as best I can, why U.S. anti-trafficking policies actually miss trafficking signs.

Thinking of this, and remembering that our administration refused to even negotiate on increasing student health resources when we fought for our first contract. But we have an AI center now.
Every time I see a news article about ChatGPT pushing vulnerable people to harm themselves and others, I want to know how the universities who have eagerly proclaimed their partnerships with this company intend to account for the increasing evidence of the harms of this tech

Do people not remember that they sent Custer into the Black Hills to look for gold? No, it shouldn’t be like this. Yes, it’s a consistent theme in our history.

Until we confront that we’ll just keep doing it and being surprised.
