In the past month, I've seen a RUSH to get involved from people who previously weren't. Meanwhile, others persist in believing the only way to help is through protest.

Some are going from 0 -> 200. Others are 0 -> 0.

Nations are made of neighborhoods. And being a good neighbor still matters.

These LA businesses are closing in solidarity with the nationwide anti-ICE strike:
From bakeries to bars, businesses are denouncing the increase in violent federal immigration enforcement in Minnesota and LA.

The “not enough” idea is pervasive right now. People sleep less and are relentlessly on edge.

The standards for enough have never been clear and rarely accessible.

Give yourself credit for what you ARE doing instead of what you’re not.

Punishment is a blunt force weapon.
Stella Carlson - known as "Pink Jacket Lady" - is a hero!

Anderson Cooper is gentle as she recounts how her phone & whistle don't feel like enough.

And yet, with them, she created irrefutable evidence of Alex Pretti's murder. And now gives a sincere & articulate call for justice.

You know what I think is the most important part of the attack on Ilhan Omar?

How she WENT FOR HIM. Clipped it where she starts to confront him.

This thread shows again that this is also true: we can love strangers we will never meet and want them to be safe and healthy just as we are.
“I live on a rural island in Alaska, reachable only by plane or boat. In our little town, 50 to 100 people stand outside each week at our town's roundabout to protest and hold vigil and stand in solidarity with you. We hold signs supporting Minnesota and demanding ICE Out.”

It is an act of incredible bravery to record ICE’s abuses - and an increasingly dangerous one

If you or a friend volunteer as an observer on the ground and you are worried about your device being confiscated & your videos destroyed, here’s an idea for streaming so they can’t stop the signal:
Resistance idea for folks at protests worried their videos will be lost when their devices are taken:

Have a friend at home set up a Streamyard account

While you (possibly others) are in the field, they send you a link to the stream

Video goes live on multiple platforms & is stored w/ Streamyard

For centuries, American Men have convinced each other - through culture & conditioning - that violence is power.

When in reality: violence is loss of control.

99% of people only commit violence when they lose control of their emotions.

Violence does NOT DISPLAY POWER - it only shows weakness.

Still holds.
Until we remember we’re all fallible, cycles of violence will continue.

Imagine being unable to articulate anything outside the grammar of fear and hatred.

Imagine how sad one must be to look at a child and see someone to deport.

That’s not power, that’s extreme trauma.

Compassion is a practice.

How quaint. Instead of improving their products to meet students' needs, Open AI just keeps making it harder to teach media & AI literacy. And without that literacy, no student should be using AI for anything.

Continuous practice is not separate from faith in practice. We are not just sitting on our meditation cushion like so much old laundry. We have to have faith that the dharma will restore sanity and goodness, seeing that our whole life, can be a medium for practice, not just the time in the zendo.

🧵ICE's tactics for arresting and holding observers and protestors is ever-shifting, and I'm hearing lots of different stories. Right now, my perspective is that these are your best practices:

This is an excellent thread by a writer/activist/thinker I respect very much. Recommended.
I came to Minneapolis to report on what's going on, and one of the main questions I showed up with is "just what is the scale of the resistance?" After all, we're all used to the news calling Portland a "war zone" or whatever when it's just some protests in one part of town.

I have been actively involved in protest movements for 24 years. I have never seen anything approaching this scale. Minneapolis is not accepting what's happening here. ICE fucking murdered a woman for participating in this, and all that did is bring out more people, from more walks of life.

But when I asked an organizer what they wanted to see out of press coverage, they told me they wanted people to see the beautiful things they are building here, and not just the worst stories of the worst of ICE's crimes.

What people are doing here is beautiful. It's a tragic beauty, but a real one

Many organizers are facing the headline of the day. I get it.

And it's a good idea to keep half an eye on environment.

Just got a call from my daughter’s school here in north Hollywood that ICE has been seen near the campus. Heading over there now, hoping that’s not the case. But word is they’ve been all around NoHo and Burbank today so everyone stay safe and watch out for your neighbors.
