Months of work finally unveiled as a major investigation I worked on with the @independent.ie launches.

Every council in Ireland was asked to write a Climate Action Plan identifying local risks and what they plan to do to reduce emissions causing those risks.

We read them all...

This painting by the artist Adriaen Coorte, made in 1699, shows a simple bunch of dramatically lit asparagus, on a stone shelf.

Still life paintings of food, often called Vanitas, were a common theme in Dutch art in the 17th century and alluded to moral themes such as the brevity of life.

When we talk about outdoor play for children, many people picture swings or slides.

But what about 'natural play'? Splashing in puddles & making dens can nurture children's creativity, resilience & build connection to nature.

This webinar explores why it matters:

This is a policy failure by our government.

Once again, I ask, in good faith & without trying to be overly alarmist, what anyone has seen in the last year to make them believe that the 2026/28 elections will be free, fair, & democratic by any traditional meaning of the words?
Ossoff: "This is a seismic event. This should have people across the country absolutely shook. This is a huge deal. This is an FBI raid on the Fulton County Elections office ... This is a shot across the bow at the midterm elections. He tried to steal power when he lost it in 2020."

Antithesis: Ackshually ICE is operating in a long American tradition of racist terror.

Synthesis: Minneapolis is now the epicenter of a clash between two distinct but historically grounded American political traditions.

Intentionally building on flood plains 🤯. It's hard to be hopeful.
We need to get real. Met Éireann is not to blame for flooding damage - poor planning, building on flood plains, not implementing over 20 years of remedial action are. We were warned decades ago winter rain would increase, but continued doing nothing and built on space needed for water #spéirghorm

Whenever flooding hits, we hear in detail all about the wrecked homes, livelihoods, property, and related misery.

But NEVER the major cause: that Ireland has been totally stripped of the native ecosystems like forest & bogs that would naturally have absorbed the water.

This isn't mine, and I can't definitively find the original source. But I love this little bit of wisdom:

"If you're a fifteen-minute walk from a coffee shop, but the server there has to drive an hour to get to work, you don't live in a walkable city. You live in a theme park."
For all the fearmongering about capital flight from New York City, there’s an exodus few want to talk about: working people.

Sky-high rents and outrageous child care costs are already pushing families out of the city they keep running.

That’s what we have to change.

Flooding is only going to get more extreme as climate breakdown worsens.
It's so important that we don't let the most clueless people try to fix this by dredging and channelling...it only makes flooding worse but does make it look like there's lots of work being done.

Bicycles do not require numberplates in Switzerland, even most e-bikes and cargo e-bikes don't

However, if your e-bike can go faster than 25km/h it is classed the same as a moped and must have a license plate...

...which is exactly the same as the law here in Ireland, only here it is not enforced.
What madness is being published in the Irish Times here? Zurich doesn't have plates for bikes (and Paris innovated licence plates first...) @cianginty.bsky.social
