House passes bill to end the shutdown and punt on DHS funding, sending it to Trump
Trump has said he'll sign the bill to end the brief shutdown. It funds almost all of government while putting DHS on a stopgap after federal agents killed two people in Minneapolis.

i was actually shocked to see the numbers on new research from Global Energy Monitor on new gas projects in the US: nearly 100 gigawatts of power—enough to power tens of millions of homes—are currently in development explicitly to power data centers. At the end of 2023 that number was 4 gigawatts

BIG news from @bloomberg.com, which confirms that ICE has gone ahead and *purchased* multiple commercial warehouses with the aim of converting them into mass detention camps.

This is likely to be the big detention story of 2026 — literal warehousing of people.

From me: Chuck Schumer's legislative demands for DHS funding are so narrow they almost mirror what ICE/CBP have just announced in Minneapolis. Just as Republicans were conceding the need to negotiate, Democrats pre-negotiated themselves into mush.

Adam Schiff is still acting like the threat is a *future* problem.

Turn on the fucking TV, my guy. Who gives a shit if they're wearing military uniforms or fucking crocs, the threat is here and now

This isn't mine, and I can't definitively find the original source. But I love this little bit of wisdom:

"If you're a fifteen-minute walk from a coffee shop, but the server there has to drive an hour to get to work, you don't live in a walkable city. You live in a theme park."
For all the fearmongering about capital flight from New York City, there’s an exodus few want to talk about: working people.

Sky-high rents and outrageous child care costs are already pushing families out of the city they keep running.

That’s what we have to change.

The final Dem draft for the DHS appropriations bill is even less than the paltry demands that Chris Murphy outlined.

I want to read the specifics of these proposed amendments, but, as is, this is less than a slap on the wrist. It's barely scowling at a hand.
Chuck Schumer just announced demands on DHS to avoid shutdown:
1. End roving patrols, tighten rules on warrants
2. Enforce accountability & unified code of conduct for agents
3. No more masks & require bodycams

There are *already* standards on much of this.

The issue is DHS isn't following them!

I don’t love the Dem strategy of continuing to fund a hugely unpopular administration in exchange for its (unenforceable) agreement to do a bunch of things it’s already legally obligated to do.
Dems coalescing around 5 restrictions on ICE, I'm told:

DHS required to cooperate with state probes (big)
CBP stays at border
warrants for arrests
IDs, bodycams
ICE out of churches, schools

"That package unites a lot of Dems," Sen Chris Murphy tells me on the pod:
