75% of houses between Beaumont and Mobile making gumbos this week looking at this like “who’s not buying rice now?”
Across the U.S., farmers are struggling. Prices for nearly every major crop are below what it costs to grow them. Farmers in Mississippi are perhaps worse off than farmers in the rest of the country. Rice is one of their biggest crops, and almost no one is buying.
Hard Times in the Mississippi Delta as Farmers Consider Letting Crops Rot
Prices for nearly every major U.S. crop are below what it costs to grow them. But a drop in rice prices means another blow to farmers in Mississippi’s agricultural belt.

Trump throws a dagger into the Louisiana Senate race, pushing Rep. Julia Letlow to challenge Sen. Bill Cassidy, who has worked hard to stay on Trump’s good side.

Trump: “Should she decide to enter this Race, Julia Letlow has my Complete and Total Endorsement. RUN, JULIA, RUN!!!”

Blake Miguez has been begging for Trump’s attention for like a year now. He must feel pretty small!
Trump says he will endorse Julia Letlow if she runs against Bill Cassidy in a Republican senate primary.

Michelle Cottle hasn’t checked on things here in Louisiana I don’t believe.
In @nytopinion.nytimes.com

Mary Peltola’s Senate candidacy in Alaska "sends an important signal to voters well beyond her state," Michelle Cottle writes. "It telegraphs that Democrats are serious about showing up and competing everywhere."
Opinion | Mary Peltola Puts Alaska in Play for Democrats
Mary Peltola’s entry into the Alaska Senate race is a building block in an electoral strategy Democrats have been working on for months.

Big respect for Kevin Kruse. This is insane for a historian though. no need to put thoughts in the killer’s head to add responsibility to him for the actions we witnessed. He may need another 3 day break off here. React to what you see with your eyes, not what you imagine is in some killer’s head.
When Renee Good said "I'm not mad at you" what the ICE goon heard was "I'm not scared of you."

That's what enraged him. The populace wasn't fully terrorized and cowed into submission yet, so he acted to make that happen.

One thing I didn't fully appreciate until I sat on a jury and reviewed body cam footage for myself, is how cops yell contradictory instructions at people like "Don't move" "Put your hands up" "Get the fuck out of here" "Keep your hands where I can see them" etc. all screamed at your face with guns

T-Mac would be my OROY. It's silly to give it to anyone that missed half the season unless that someone was Dan Marino rookie level and Shough is not that

A few years ago I met a friend’s husband for the first time and he said that the aggravating thing about parenting was that most kid’s books are bad and I kinda flipped out on him. Because there are so many beautiful children’s books, SO MANY!
Anyway.
I always appreciate this thoughtful thread.
And that's the 2025 picture book thread. Consider any of these if you have young children in your life. Or even if you don't, give them a look. Creating a good picture book takes a special kind of sensibility and talent. These writers and artists deserve to be appreciated. Happy New Year!

This is Midnight Run erasure.
It’s so much easier for comic actors to do drama than vice versa. Look at Jim Carrey in Eternal Sunshine or Truman Show, and then look at De Niro’s comedies, they’re terrible

we all got cowed into avoiding "virtue signaling" as if the public affirmation of socially agreed upon ethical principles was somehow cringey instead of a significant part of what a "society" even is. now all there's left is vice signaling, and it's reshaping society.

Under Louisiana state law RS 14:313, it is ILLEGAL for ICE to wear masks/face coverings for the purpose of concealing their identity. There are a few exceptions to the law, but law enforcement is not one of them.

A new look at zydeco argues that Houston’s clubs and communities helped define the genre as much as Louisiana did.

Houston’s role in zydeco history is deeper — and louder — than most people realize.
Houston area was an essential ingredient to the creation of zydeco
The genre is most closely associated with Louisiana, but one musicologist points out its entire "corridor" runs from the Bayou City up to Lafayette.

JD Vance: "A lot of young people are saying housing is way too expensive. Why is that? Because we flooded the country with 30 million illegal immigrants who were taking houses that ought by right go to American citizens."
