It's December, which means it's time for James' A Christmas Carol Quotes Advent Calendar!

In keeping with the moral Dickens' tale, each one is a thinly veiled stab at certain political actors who simply must do better

"We cannot give up because we need to save what we still can." This is a mantra for the times we live through. Every little bit that you can do now will save lives further down the line. Hope defeats despair.
It is certainly too late to preserve what we were given to us when the oldest living human on earth today was born. That’s now gone for at least 500 years.

But we cannot give up because we need to save what we still can.

"Academics should use their knowledge to make the world a better place... If not, what is the point of us? To paraphrase Toni Morrison, in the face of global injustice, climate catastrophe, and the heat of racial injustice, THIS is precisely the time when we must go to work."
One of the arguments I make here is that Black women academics, especially, often have our academic credentials disregarded (implicitly and explicitly) if we mention, even in the slightest way, how our discipline reproduces inequality – structurally or conceptually.

"3.5% rule" "60% of nonviolent protests succeed"

You may have heard these cited as fact. But they stem from a single dubious source.

In the first in a series @thefreeradical.org debunks these, showing how they're propaganda to erase the power of militant, riotous revolt and peddle passive protest:
Liberation is a Riot, Part 1: Debunking the Sanitized Nonviolence Myth
Based on shoddy research, bad history and outright lies, status quo propaganda portrays a sanitized version of ‘nonviolent’ protest as the only option, to damaging effect. It’s time to debunk it, and ...

Okay so yes the gov is wrong to do this but I don’t hear about these twice daily briefings from the lobby, I hear about constant Westminster gossip that they’re often creating rather than actual accountability. If the lobby wants access maybe the lobby should be doing its job in the first place
The lobby is much maligned but these twice daily briefings are essential scrutiny because questions can be asked from any outlet - no matter their politics - on any topic to the No10 spokesman who must stay in the room until everyone is finished. Government fear this somehow!
