Roslindale to Cambridge. I'll probably talk most about local politics and housing policy. Also into space stuff. Very bad Learned League player.

This election showed that residents want action and collaboration, not division or delay, and they expect us to govern with compassion and never lose sight of our neighbors who are struggling.

The voters sent a clear message. They want a City Council that will move forward, not backward, and that will act boldly on housing, safe streets, and building a city that welcomes everyone.

Voting is at the heart of Democracy and I want to thank everyone who voted on Tuesday. I also want to congratulate everyone who ran for City Council and School Committee. Putting yourself out there takes courage, and every candidate deserves respect for stepping up to serve their community.

I'm a semi regular public commenter and I agree with this wholeheartedly. Cambridge comment is less skewed than many other cities (at least in regard to homeowner status), and less skewed than it used to be because renters here have organized - and it's still pretty bad!

That’s not to say Cambridge shouldn’t listen to its residents. But when public comment becomes a ritual stage for a tiny, unrepresentative minority, it’s worth asking whom that process really serves.

Chris and JHawk did excellent civic work last night and gave who knows how many Cambridge candidates, campaign staff, and volunteers a couple extra hours of desperately needed sleep.
If anyone is interested in the actual process behind how @johnhawkinson.bsky.social and other volunteers produce the "early results" for Cambridge City Council election #1s, I did a writeup of the process by which dozens of folks helped people get results last night.

An incomplete list of cities where housing abundance was a major campaign issue & pro-housing candidates held or expanded majorities:
- Bozeman, MT
- Cambridge, MA
- Durham, NC
- Kalispell, MT
- Littleton, CO
- Manchester, NH
- Missoula, MT
- Salt Lake City, UT
- Seattle, WA
- Wilmington, NC

💪
We'll post a list sometime soon but in addition to all the D vs. R stories tonight, in basically every nonpartisan election in the country today, the more pro-housing candidate won.

The answers to the question about the multi-family zoning ordinance show why it was needed.

Of those who say they don't support it, some say they dislike that it doesn't mandate deep affordability, and others say they dislike that it doesn't mandate middle income affordability.

Build more housing, so crappy landlords can't get away with shenanigans.
Anyway if you have the option to vote for local candidates who will actually work on the rent issue, please do that, even if you’re not currently renting. And then hold them to their campaign promises.

I’ve worked so hard for so many years to have no savings and a moldy rental. Shit sucks.

I can't stress this enough: in ranked choice systems like Cambridge has, your best bet at getting the council & school committee you want is to rank candidates in order of your genuine preference.

That means you should give your #1 vote to the person you most want to win.

This council election may be close. I'm talking to people on doors who seem to think the recent upzoning allows heights 3x what it actually does, thanks to NIMBY propaganda.

If you care about affordable housing, please vote! If you can knock doors or make calls too, even better.
