I'm kind of shocked that anyone is still proposing technocratic solutions to the "debate" over immigration. Even if this were a good idea (and it is not), Republican elites and media will never tell their base about it. You can't policy your way out of a propaganda problem!

the intensity of my anger at those who would criminalize the homeless — a population literally created by the greed and callousness of the ruling class — is very hard to contain. it was you who dismantled the safety net. if you don’t like the results, put it back

But yeah, this is why spending the last five years embracing policing as a common-sense bipartisan institution, with critics being attributed to the result of some mass hysteria, was always going to end poorly. Because the police weren’t changing, and the violence never stopped.

A new report by a former NYPD executive shows that more cops doesn't necessarily equal better public safety.
NYPD head count doesn't correlate to crime rates, data suggests, despite candidate rhetoric
A former NYPD executive crunched some numbers that appear to belie some candidates' calls for more police.

The "we have to put obstacles in the way to make sure that people who don't deserve help don't get it" bureaucratic strategy just puts obstacles in the way for people who DO deserve help and then nobody gets help. It's a centrist, neoliberal tactic that keeps the status quo in place.

cop is the only job in the world where if someone points out they're actually bad at their ostensible job, it's considered an implicit argument for giving them all raises
The thesis of the article is that because American cops are so terrible at solving murder (and getting much much worse than they used to be), "experts" believe the U.S. must spend massively more money on hiring police and surveillance.

Sorry for losing my temper lol I’m really just sick of these conclusions that boil down to ‘how are we going to pay for that’ but only for things that liberate people like freedom of movement or shelter when you can look around & see the incalculable costs we pay to do harm as a form of status quo.

i think that if you are an upper income writer living in a major urban area complaining about “the laptop class” — really, if you are a knowledge worker of any kind complaining about the “laptop class — you have an obligation to quit your job and go work in a factory for a year
Apparently Mamdani voters are the most privileged class in history AND are bitter about having no money and living in an apartment with 3 roommates into their 30s.

Pick a damn lane.

What concerns me about renewed white-nationalist fervor in Western politics is not simply that it's genocidal. Most people recognize that.

I worry that 'progressives' will struggle to move beyond "we should go back to when immigrants were simply precarious and not being actively rounded up".

Most horrifying part of this imo is that this country never *stops* funding these things once they start. We've never closed Guantanamo, we've never shuttered Homeland Security. The potential damage here lasts forever.
More context of scale for the #ICE budget.
We are going to war with ourselves.

The fact that Democrats spent last year touting their support for Biden’s “border militarization and no path to citizenship” bill, I’m scared of how Democrats’ default will be to normalize these fascistic levels of ICE funding if/when they get back power. We will need the agency dismantled.

law professors have been unable to understand why people are actually concerned about this case. it’s not about nationwide injunctions per se, it’s about a court that waited until the issue hurt the GOP, and then intervened on behalf of one of the most egregious constitutional violations we’ve seen
Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson called yesterday's decision about nationwide injunctions "an existential threat to the rule of law."

She's mistaken.

The fact that anyone could believe that Trump was going to be "only targeting criminals" is a testament to how much the media skews people's impressions of crime and public safety (also how racist people are that they would believe there was so much rampant criminality!).

I still can't get past the idea that people in America are now supposed to accept that this is a valid form of law enforcement and just assume it's fine when random dudes in groups with face-coverings, no ID, no warrant, & no uniform grab people off the street and force them into unmarked vehicles
Not an original point but worth saying again - there is not a single element in this picture that identifies any of these folks as law enforcement agents. No badges, no uniforms, no vests. Out of context it just looks like a bunch of random guys are kidnapping a mayoral candidate.
