But yeah, this is why spending the last five years embracing policing as a common-sense bipartisan institution, with critics being attributed to the result of some mass hysteria, was always going to end poorly. Because the police weren’t changing, and the violence never stopped.

The "we have to put obstacles in the way to make sure that people who don't deserve help don't get it" bureaucratic strategy just puts obstacles in the way for people who DO deserve help and then nobody gets help. It's a centrist, neoliberal tactic that keeps the status quo in place.

Sorry for losing my temper lol I’m really just sick of these conclusions that boil down to ‘how are we going to pay for that’ but only for things that liberate people like freedom of movement or shelter when you can look around & see the incalculable costs we pay to do harm as a form of status quo.
