You may remember me from Twitter. Still talking about UX stuff. Funemployed. @khuh.bsky.social Mondays @ noon Pacific. Defend trans kids.
I interviewed last year with a company that does this AI for police stuff and got rejected, which I now consider a blessing because I don’t have to think about how their software is probably getting people jailed for hallucinating transmogrify.
About 18 seconds into this news story the reporter says the police AI report writing software erroneously wrote that someone turned into a frog. Yet this is the headline they’re going with.

It finally hit me that Geese is scratching the same Neutral Milk Hotel / Ariel Pink's Haunted Graffiti in the big music critics and that's why it bounces off me. It's just... ok. It ain't the Strokes.

It feels so dated now, but it blew my mind when I was 10 and was “they can make videos like THAT?”

It’s hard to explain how massive videos were in the 80s. How mind blowing. How utterly over the top.

It’s like they turned @themountaingoats.bsky.social “This Year” into a slasher film
That time that Elizabeth Holmes and Sunny Balwani were being pursued by a memory-altering tiger, and their plans to kill it before year-end

The people who freaked out when strangers showed up to daycares because pedophiles abducting kids or whatever are now strangers showing up to daycares and not getting why they look awful doing it
Trump guys are about to Comet Pizza every third daycare center because they think they are all fronts for Somali money laundering. They're only doing this near cities with progressive mayors. This is straight up Government by LibsOfTikTok.

I said Shedeur Sanders has shown himself to be a a mediocre NFL QB, and someone jumped in my replies screaming that he was the worst and how dare I suggest he be GOOD

by calling him mediocre

OFFICER! ARREST THIS PERSON FOR CRIMES AGAINST COMMON DECENCY
Everyone: "When I see someone talk about MTG, it's never the one I want it to be about."

Me: Here, hope that helps

We're dealing with something akin to "dry drunk" behavior in Gen Z -- they're not involved in any fundamentalist institutions, but they act like they are, even when they insist that's what they're not. They want purity and holiness and perfection. They want polar good and bad. They're mad at nuance.
The way people have started to speak about infidelity as a crime akin to physical or sexual abuse is wild. You can’t send the whole of France to jail.

This is true and I was the only one on set excited about it (and playing the song on my phone to blank stares)
Just watched the new Knives Out and I think it's really important you know that the scene in the Seminary's Gym is filmed in the same place Rick Astley filmed the music video for Never Gonna Give You Up.

I saw the window tracery and immediately made my friends pause the film so I could tell them.

I don’t expect people to know all the bad stuff about every originally famous for non-political stuff person, and think people should react to the ignorance like an evil version of this XKCD, but I do want people to act like Ms. Roan when they’re informed instead of getting defensive/combative.

Fun fact: Seattle is on target to end the year with ~40% fewer murders than last year and less than half of the 2023 peak

Another fun fact: You’d never know it from the local media

Srsly they would flip when they discover restaurants in “flyover country” can close as 9 or even 8, while coffee shops may not open before 8am. Oh, and while there are some Michelin-level restaurants, there’s not exactly a French Laundry anywhere but Yountville

Good luck techbros
I would love to see a California tech-enhanced billionaire try to live somewhere else. I would watch the reality show about that.

Having burned through fake Norse mythology, they move on to the Crusades, an easy way to dump undesirables and zealots on other countries where Europe was not sending their best

Checks out
Far-right groups are co-opting the aesthetics of the Crusades for their own objectives, transforming an obsession with feudal justice into a campaign for a White Christian nation.
Why We Should All Be Worried About "Crusadercore"
This online trend equips young, White men with a historically bastardized visual lexicon — one that gives new credence and religious authority to far-right bigotry.

We’ve pulled drugs from the market with fewer linked suicides than ChatGPT has
Remember:

When Tylenol was poisoned *by an outsider* and killed people, the company recalled all their products & redesigned them.

When Intel’s Pentium had a bug so obscure it affected 1 in _9 billion_ long division calculations, they recalled their chips.

ChatGPT was made deadly *by its team*.
i don’t see how any of the benefits of chatgpt and other consumer-facing LLMs can possibly outweigh their incredible ability to induce suicides
