I tell someone new about this every few days. Everyone needs to understand that the utility commissioner in Arizona got up there and said "it's not my job to keep you alive" on X.

An 82-year-old woman died in May 2024 after her power was cut off on a very hot day. Her son and an advocate say this shows an issue with state policies.

Comparing US response to authoritarian threat with that of other places I've worked, witnessed or studied, one striking difference has been how much default toward thinking "someone" - institution, leader, legacy org - will step in has kept us pursuing approaches unfit for the task.
