AI is breaking the academic publication infrastructure.
We're experiencing an unbelievable deluge of submissions. At our journal we got ~200 per year in 2020. Last year it was 600. This year it's 800 with several months to go. So that's why we're slower to get stuff out for review.

ICE snipers is just not a thing I want to see ever anywhere
Scoop: A sudden no-bid ICE contract for specialized sniper training has gone to a decorated former Marine who is also the brother of a GOP lawmaker.

Reached by WIRED, he says there was no hookup; 20 years in a reconnaissance unit and even more as an instructor simply left him uniquely qualified.
US Congressman’s Brother Lands No-Bid Contract to Train DHS Snipers
DHS says retired Marine sniper Dan LaLota's firm is uniquely qualified to meet the government’s needs. LaLota tells WIRED his brother, GOP congressman Nick LaLota, played no role in the contract.

one very real, concrete way to help feed Gaza right now is through donating to World Central Kitchen
WCK’s mobile bakery in Gaza is currently producing 45,000 loaves of bread every day. With more supplies, including flour and fuel, we'd be able to more than double that daily output and support more Palestinian families in need. #ChefsForGaza

Thread 🧵
As folks are watching Fit For TV, the documentary about The Biggest Loser, a few reflection questions:

How did The Biggest Loser teach you to think about people who are fatter than you?
How did it teach you to treat them?
Where have you unlearned those lessons? Where can you do more unlearning?

One of the first things you learn about trans competent primary care is how many of us routinely develop PVD, UTIs, and kidney stones from avoiding or not having access to bathrooms. As a fun bonus, the disinfo machine then uses this high prevalence to make mendacious claims about HRT.
If you cannot go to the bathroom at work, you cannot go to work. If you cannot go to the bathroom at school, you cannot go to school. This effectively bans transgender people from a broad swath of public life in the UK
🚨 BREAKING | Labour is set to impose a sweeping ban on trans people using any "single-sex space".

In EHRC guidance that Labour is set to approve, trans people will be barred from accessing toilets, gyms and changing rooms that match their gender.

if you’re cis & you want to see what the lab is cooking up for the future of US trans people, gwen’s coverage of texas legislature sessions—like for example this session where they put a trans bathroom ban (where no assaults have happened) in front of flood relief (where people died)—is essential.

Can’t believe I didn’t know about PBS Passport before. I am loving it ⬇️
I can confirm the PBS Passport is a very good deal for $5/month or $2.50/month if you do yearly.

Thousands of hours of top notch content. NOVA is great. The new Ken Burns doc on Leonardo da Vinci is excellent.

The way I feel this down to my soul.
Is it fatigue or is it the psychic cost of being asked to look past death and societal harm to schedule meetings in my Outlook calendar
“ACA health insurance will cost the average person 75% more next year, research shows”

“The average person who buys Affordable Care Act insurance will be paying 75% more for their premium, according to the analysis from KFF, a nonpartisan health policy research group.”

This is why I subscribed to WIRED 👇
I'd just like to point out how weird it is that places with hundreds or even thousands of reporters — the NYT, WaPo, CBS, NBC, AP, etc. — are all getting pummeled on every major story by the dozen computerboys at Wired. To fumble the bag this consistently is, at some point, cowardice and a choice.

The better you are at a thing, the more "AI" will be a drag on your time, because it's operating at a lower level of skill than you are, and you have to fix what it does, rather than just do what you already know how to do.

On Friday night, we walked the length of Manhattan, from Inwood Hill to Battery Park.

New Yorkers deserve a Mayor they can see, hear, even yell at. The city is in the streets.
