When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the Lord will not answer you in that day.
The Republican Party has abandoned any semblance of allegiance to the constitution or the people. They could stop this farce today. Even in an overt monarchy, only slobbering sycophants would allow a mad king to loot his subjects like this.
President Trump has filed a lawsuit against the IRS, in which he demands that the IRS, which he as president controls, pay him $10 billion.

I would argue that the case for dismantling ICE has, at this point, virtually nothing to do with larger questions of immigration enforcement and reform, it's just clearly incompatible with a free and democratic society to maintain a secret police force with sweeping and arbitrary authority.
Senator Gallego weighs in as well. Note that at the start of 2025 he was considered a *moderate* on immigration and co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act. Him and many other Dems have been increasingly horrified at what ICE is doing and shifted away from a "more enforcement" focus.

It will be hard for people in the future to understand the stupidity that rules the moment. They will look for reasons, but this is not a time of reason. Those in the positions of greatest influence are malicious and corrupt or in the perennial business of apologizing for power.
American commentators and right wing politicians are expressing shock that countries they have repeatedly threatened with invasion, disrespected on the international stage, and economically bullied are forging new alliances.

Sorry guys, but it’s FAFO time.

I know people on Bsky know this but I hope it filters out: The feds are OCCUPYING the Twin Cities. This is a blockade, a siege. They are shutting down economic and civic activity. They are conducting "papers please" stops. They are criminalizing being a bystander/witness.

You could be next.

We're so far beyond a constitutional order at this point. The barons of 1215 are having a good laugh at us.
Trump: "I have determined that, for the Good of our Country, especially in these very troubled and dangerous times, our Military Budget for the year 2027 should not be $1 Trillion Dollars, but rather $1.5 Trillion. This will allow us to build the 'Dream Military' that we have long been entitled to."

People who fancy quoting the Melian Dialogue ("the strong do what they can and the weak suffer what they must") ignore the fact that Thucydides was clearly portraying this as the kind of hubris that squandered Athens' primacy and paved the way for a devastating peer war that it ultimately lost.

The top echelons of political journalism are increasingly occupied by those who worship power and its exercise, unencumbered by other considerations.
the most braindead kind of take in these situations. we've had the unquestioned power to turn most countries into glass parking lots for most of our lifetimes. who on earth is still impressed by this?

The Olivia Nuzzi story and the Bari Weiss at CBS story are the same story, which is that the upper echelons of legacy media are absolutely rife with people who worship power and don't feel burdened by any sense of responsibility to their profession or the public.

Here's a better view of the now-deleted photo showing Trump with Epstein and Trump with a group of young girls.

The photo was originally posted as item EFTA00000468 but was later deleted. Now the 'official' list simply jumps from EFTA00000467 to EFTA00000469.

Why were a small number of people with patently bad intentions allowed to do so much damage? It wasn't long ago that such people were correctly excluded from respectable discourse. Hopefully the remaining free societies learn from this example.

Maybe the analogy breaks here: The numerical result of a calculation is not just a representation, but the object itself. Expressions of language, on the other hand, are always representations.
This is an ad hoc response but perhaps computing things and knowing things are not the same class of mental activity, and there isn’t a parallel between automating the process of computation (which is what calculating and arithmetic are) and automating the process of knowledge.
The curmudgeon in me says we’re paving the path to our own stupidity

But engineer me wonders how different this is than the introduction of the calculator/computer?

The story of human evolution for the last 100 years has been technology replacing human skills previously thought irreplaceable

Some day, if we're lucky, they'll make a movie about this and most everybody will believe that they would have taken the side of the postal worker.
A U.S. postal worker on Long Island is accused of trying to help a man escape from ICE custody earlier this month, according to a federal criminal complaint: https://gothamist.visitlink.me/YNagDp

These are always fascinating, to think of the meetings and memos circulating before these changes. The first headline is direct about the founders timely warnings of abuse.

The second is as banal as Trump finding a new putter.

People want to believe there is a line that the newspapers will not cross as the trappings of representative government are dismantled. Evidence is mounting that there's no such line.
I can’t believe there are not one but two articles, in major papers, with this dumb framing. It is not NIMBY to express dismay when a big part of the White House is suddenly rubbled

This is quite a hed/subhed.
1) Start with Vance. Use strong action verb. Accept the autocratic premise that the “Marines’ Might” are Vance’s to flex.
2) Mention the protest second and absurdly describe them as in the thousands
3) Treat Trump’s strong man use of the military as a partisan scuffle.
