People want to believe there is a line that the newspapers will not cross as the trappings of representative government are dismantled. Evidence is mounting that there's no such line.
I can’t believe there are not one but two articles, in major papers, with this dumb framing. It is not NIMBY to express dismay when a big part of the White House is suddenly rubbled

The GOP, in becoming a shell corporation for Trumpism, has embraced kleptocracy: Socially conservative, fiscally criminal.
President Trump has pardoned Binance founder Changpeng Zhao, whose crypto exchange has been boosting the Trump family's own crypto venture.

This is quite a hed/subhed.
1) Start with Vance. Use strong action verb. Accept the autocratic premise that the “Marines’ Might” are Vance’s to flex.
2) Mention the protest second and absurdly describe them as in the thousands
3) Treat Trump’s strong man use of the military as a partisan scuffle.

Correspondents were a thing long before anyone uttered the term "remote work". The companies that have bought up journalism continue to dig its grave.
2. Rolling Stone is owned by a large media conglomerate, which is ending remote work across its brands.

My home is Portland, Oregon, ~1,000 miles from the nearest office, so this marks the end of the line for me at RS.

CNN is also doing this.
“.. On closer inspection, however, it turned out that the image was not a photograph of a real event in Portland, but instead a fabrication created by combining two photographs of scenes that unfolded in South America nearly a decade apart ..”

Look. Invading our own country is about as straightforward a case as you can have for impeachment. The GOP abandoning the Constitution is kind of the only story there is and it gets no coverage.
Guys. I just had a crazy idea. What if the President DIDN’T deploy troops in American cities. Just a thought. Have we tried that before?

If Kathleen Parker were a character from Sophocles, she'd have plucked her eyes out by now, but she's on brand for what the Washington Post has become.

Those who eulogize Romney as the Last of the Romans are, as he is at pains to prove them, mistaken. At the same time, he is truly representative of the party before Trump in so far as it was the party that made Trump possible and unleashed him on the country.
Mitt Romney has revealed he pleaded with the Joe Biden administration to pre-emptively pardon Donald Trump.
Romney Reveals He Tried to Get Biden to Pardon Trump
He said he feared a slippery slope of revenge prosecutions.

There was a good deal of investment in the idea that Bush v. Gore was an outlier. The idea that it signified the future of the Supreme Court was unthinkable for the constitutional order. With the decay of constitutionality, what was once unthinkable is simply yesterday's headlines, and tomorrow's.
6/ and realize, admit that reform is necessary. But quite a few still persist making excuses for the current corruption as though it were a matter of differing judicial philosophies etc. In a way it's professional self-preservation because if the work of the legal judicial/academic system isn't ...

So at some point do we get an Emmanuel Goldstein or "The Theory and Practice of Oligarchical Collectivism", or are we just supposed to focus on The Brotherhood when we do the Two Minutes of Hate?

What a time to be a student. Your teacher might get fired for not honoring an apologist for gun violence, but when your peers in schools across the nation get murdered week after week, there's no state-ordered mourning. At best you get active shooter drills.
INBOX- State Superintendent Ryan Walters says after investigating reports that came in through Awareity, they've identified 70 certified teachers from 44 districts who've made statements regarding Charlie Kirk's murder and 12 school districts who did not participate in a moment of silence. #oklahoma

Just what we needed. Another media channel controlled by right wing billionaires.
The new TikTok US entity would be controlled by a consortium of Silver Lake, Andreessen-Horowitz, and Oracle. 80% US, 20% China ownership. One board member appointed by the US government. Existing users would be expected to shift to a new app (lol).

Would not be surprised if this nukes usership.

This is simply untenable. There is no way forward with media and political classes captured by the right. Every time someone commits a crime you have to pray it's not an undesirable or it's purge time, then when it turns out to be themselves again they just shrug and wait for the next one.

Murder is bad, full stop. The consequences of this particular murder and the people spurred to action by it are likely to be bad. Here endeth all of the even close to nice things you need to say about Charlie Kirk.
Kirk waged a national campaign to tarnish MLK's legacy. This was last year.

Wild. The political murders of legislators in Minnesota were “killings.” The shooting of Kirk which cause is unknown is an “assassination.”

Comer: "We're gonna support doing this in other cities if it works out in Washington DC. We spend a lot on our military. Our military has been in many countries around the world for the past two decades walking the streets trying to reduce crime. We need to focus on the big cities in America now."

Absolutely bonkers that the editor of (what at least used to be) a paper of record aims to compete with nakedly partisan propaganda.
KESSLER: “Why I left the Washington Post… like being on the Titanic, drifting aimlessly as it sank with not enough lifeboats…”

An editor asked him: “How do we appeal more to Fox News viewers”? 🤔

The fact-checker’s reply: “We have to tell the truth.” glennkessler.substack.com/p/why-i-left...

The stewards of U.S. political journalism, while disowning a role in establishing or maintaining norms, have made it clear to the most casual observer that it's not only ok for Trump to break any law of God or men— it's expected.
had Biden randomly wandered on the White House roof shouting at reporters about nuclear weapons, Jake Tapper would drop everything to pitch a new series of books and Hannity would anchor ongoing special coverage until 2029

but when Trump does it it's just Trump being Trump!
