If he returns to power, I expect him to govern with unprecedented cruelty. Many supporters and enablers want this; others will simply look away, at best, expressing ineffectual embarrassment or polite dissent— not to tame the horror they have unleashed, but, like Pilate, to wash their own hands.

The Politico story preceded the October 28 Comey letter which many have argued tipped the election. It's fair to argue that the campaign should have been more cautious in the face of unknowns, but given what was known at that point, the decision matrix was not one of a losing campaign.
