I saw some pretty brutal stuff going on in my years of working as a dev for a megacorp here in Silicon Valley. So glad I don't have to do corporate work like that anymore. Stuns me that so many tech workers are still fervently anti-union after what I've witnessed.
A thread that speaks directly to how poorly understood the last 10 years in tech are to people outside of it. Anyone of good conscience inside of it has felt the brutality of capital personally & in living color. Most of the same ppl entered the field w/ aspirations to make the world a better place.
I will admit I'm hot-headed about tech worker issues, so I'l try to be more even-handed in articulating this: Think of the genuine, real grief we feel because of the decimation our good, valued friends in journalism have been enduring over recent years. We know they're victims of heartless tycoons.

Stuff like this is so alienating to me, because... I don't know who this is talking about. The communities I come from are people who are deeply technical, and who are also deeply passionate and creative people who are brilliant artists and activists and educators and writers. Who is this aimed at?

Problem: water from the sink keeps splashing the paper towel roll when washing dishes.

Solution: throw together an idea in Fusion, and bam a few hours later, it * actually exists* (and works great)!

3D printing is awesome :D

Always a great sign for how things are going in your country when 21-year-olds are like “hey, I innovated a system to play bagpipes in tear gas”
Jack Duffy attaches a respirator to his bagpipes to play through tear gas. “I always play it whenever the police retreat because it's like, ‘You fucking ran while we stayed,’” he says.

A lot of anti-AI twitter probably has me blocked by now but if you're close to anyone in that space I would say we likely share a core value of "Gemini should not be providing plans to circumvent ITAR in ways that violate the Geneva Convention".

More attention on this would help expedite a fix.
For any AI system, there is a set of euphemisms and dual use framings that will allow it to construct nearly any output.

This jailbreak teaches Gemini 3 Pro to construct and step into such framings on the fly, and thus to route around its own safety infrastructure.

anyway I'm just saying, this is why those annoying people who care about privacy and user freedom keep warning people about services like this where you don't have the freedom to move elsewhere.

So please consider that when you're evaluating Discord replacements. Don't just find Discord 2.

a nice thing about when the internet was a bunch of little sites and servers was that it was a lot harder for governments to pressure "the chat provider everyone uses" to implement age verification.

you wanna pressure 300 separate IRC servers? good luck with that. but one company? easy

Kid Rock's dad owned multiple car dealerships and he grew up in the suburbs of Detroit. Bad Bunny went from bagging groceries and recording his songs in his room to winning multiple Grammys. Which one is the better encapsulation of hard work and the American Dream?

in an era when carnivore diet influencers are in charge of the american nuclear arsenal we have to admit the "annoying vegan" stereotype barely ever actually existed and the "all meat diet guy" is real, increasingly omnipresent, and way more annoying and inconvenient to actually be around

Good morning. The President of the United States was in the middle of the most serious child sex trafficking ring of the last quarter century.

He is referenced not a dozen times in the case files. Not 100 times. Not 1,000 times. He’s referenced 38,000 times.

It’s pretty crazy that the president and his family are just stealing billions and billions of dollars directly from taxpayers and the political media is like “It’s Trump so this isn’t a big deal, probably”
“Four of [Don Jr]’s portfolio companies have won contracts from the Trump [regime] this year amounting to $735 MILLION… It looks like more Trump enrichment. When the public and the private are as intertwined as they are in this [regime] it’s hard to tell the difference.”

I am so interested to see how the same press that lost its collective mind over a tan suit, eating ice cream, falling off a bike, the way a woman laughed, and other meaningless bullshit protects him, and normalizes this despicable, racist, disqualifying behavior that would end any other presidency.
1. It was not an accident.
2. It was not a staffer.
3. While the president may have dementia his racism is not due to dementia.
4. He isn’t sorry. He means every racist thought he shares.
5. His base agrees with him.
6. He will do it again.
7. No one in power will hold him accountable.

Every instance of "AI democratizes the arts, you're classist and ableist and a gatekeeper for trying to stop it" is a slap in the face to the literally centuries of poor, disabled people making art on the margins and a crass lie in service of a machine that strips down and regurgitates dreams

This headline is true and I also couldn't disagree with the author more. To state the obvious, yeah, this is Zack de la Rocha's moment. But for whatever reason, he's out. And that's fine. The guy doesn't owe anyone a thing.
Zack de la Rocha, This Is the Moment You Were Made For
Tom Morello played a set of Rage Against the Machine songs at a Minneapolis concert, but they were missing one crucial ingredient: Zack de la Rocha.

Hey, so, I don’t do civil litigation, is it generally considered good when the judge does this?
