Today seems like a good day to talk about the Calgary zoo’s penguin walk. When P was little we went to it a lot! You don’t have to go invade Antarctica…sorry Greenland…to walk with them www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
Penguins 'waiting by the door' to take part in daily stroll through Calgary Zoo | CBC News
It wasn't on the scale of March of the Penguins, but a baker's dozen of king penguins strutted through the Calgary Zoo Wednesday to mark 14 years of the winter event.

One of my favorite computer bugs is when a guy found that he couldn't send email to anywhere over 500 miles away.

The bug turned out to be the speed of light: the timeout length was accidentally set to 3 milliseconds, and ~500 miles is 3 milli-lightseconds.

It annoys me that Reddit is so disproportionately anti-tipping, because normally it would be a good place to get advice on social norms for that sort of thing, but for tipping it can't be trusted

There was a moment in last week's Abbott Elementary where a teacher had a disruptive boy in her class, so she sat a high-achieving girl next to him to be a good influence.

Folks, don't listen to the folks that tell you AI will take away your busywork.

Busywork performs a function. While you're doing it, background processes are still working on more complex problems.

You may find yourself 'miraculously' able to solve a knotty problem after some busywork.

Time for another cat timeline cleanse!

I ended up with my kitty, Bubbles, after I fostered her and her 2 sisters. They were my Powerpuff Kittens 💥, that's how she got her name.

Can someone on the ground near a detainment camp start a volunteer transport network? People could sign up to drive refugees home, one leg of the trip at a time. Animal rescues have moved dogs cross-country this way for years.
Yesterday, I drove refugees that had been shipped off to Texas all the way back home to St. Paul

Seeing them reunite with their families reminded me this is their home.

So keep sending them to Texas. I’ll keep driving ‘em back and introducing them to Bucc-ee’s and KC barbecue along the way.

The new Toronto Public Library website doesn't let you pause holds indefinitely, it requires you to specify an end date. That's completely contrary to how I use my holds list!

The Toronto Library's new website is requiring me to create a username!

Do people typically use names based on their real names, or pseudonymous online identities?

If your neighbour sets their house on fire for 4 years & then puts the fire out for 4 years & then sets their house on fire again for 4 more years, you probably shouldn't be making long term plans that rely on your neighbour's house not being on fire, even if they manage to put out the fire again.

"I want 12 peas please"

That's so oddly specific! How did that line end up in there?

If you live in the Cities, an easy way to help immigrant families in hiding is: laundry! Laundromats are ICE magnets, so people without washers need help.

The People’s Laundry will drop off laundry to your door to wash and dry and pick up a few days later:

What strikes me about this is, in his capacity as the President of the United States, he could probably actually do something that genuinely deserves the Nobel Peace Prize if he prioritized doing so.
Norwegian PM Støre says Trump repeatedly raises—complains about, pleads for, and demands—the Nobel Peace Prize every time they meet. Støre gives same answer each time: decision is made independently by Norwegian Nobel Committee, with no role for Norwegian gov—a concept Trump appears unable to grasp.

This is such a cool illustration of how the Mercator map distorts the size of Greenland, which looks as big as the whole continent of Africa on that map but is actually the size of Mexico.

Went to an aquarium supply store last night and was delighted to see the staff in N95 masks and all customers still required to wear masks also. I wish I saw more places still doing this. The “Covid surcharges” sign behind the till particularly got me 😂

As a Canadian, my advice: do it anyways.
It's effectively impossible to boycott US companies because they own so many British brands. You'd have to stop buying Cadburys, Walkers Crisps, HP sauce.... or shopping at Gails or Waterstones etc etc...

Whenever I've encountered ICE they seem genuinely puzzle that a 40-something white dude isn't on their side.
ICE seems to get completely flummoxed when they’re being yelled at by white men over 35. They kind of put their heads down and shuffle their feet. It’s like their kryptonite.

Randomly googled the girl I had a crush on when I was 18, and she's a Suzy Eddie Izzard fan (compatibility!) and also has teenage children (incompatibility!)

(Nothing came of the crush because I was uncomfortable with the fac that she was under 18, even though the age difference was trivial)

I'm thinking if 94% of your users don't want a particular feature, that feature shouldn't be enabled by default?

I love the idea that Betazoids are non-verbal on #StarfleetAcademy - I thought when watching TNG that it must be challenging for Lwaxana Troi to be an ambassador working within verbal cultures!

Can anyone tell whether this is an existing sign language or if they invented a new one for this show?
