Thinking today how homelessness runs through this story, through Epstein's (Virginia Guiffre had been homeless before meeting him), and even through Gaiman's (his nanny was sleeping on the beach when Palmer recruited her, and he used threats of homelessness against another victim).
The woman whom the House Ethics Committee determined Matt Gaetz paid for sex when she was 17 years old was living in a homeless shelter, working at McDonald's, and needed the money for braces www.nytimes.com/2025/11/13/u...

OK, I am now understanding why the rich ruling class wants generative AI to write their emails for them.

Interesting overlap in the Venn diagram of "rich" and "bad at writing emails" and "writes a lot of emails"

The weird thing about this headline is it explains what a penny is but not what a Mint is.

(I think they're both common knowledge, but penny is far more common)
The US Mint has said that it will end the production of the penny, its lowest denomination coin, in cost-saving move

Apart from the problem of attendance targets, why on earth would you need AI to generate it??
🚸🧵 The rush to deploy AI-generated attendance targets across England’s schools risks treating symptoms, not causes. We’re aiming for “pre-pandemic” normal when many pupils still carry the legacies of it.

This is Goose. His stick didn't fit through the door at first. But Goose believed in himself, and more importantly, so did his doorman. 13/10 (TT: bigstickgoose)

I realize this is a ridiculous ask, but putting it out there in the world:

Looking for running/athletic shoes that fit a women's size 11 (could be men's or women's shoes) in dark/deep colours - something like black with red accents - and no white.

Can you combine liquid and powder dishwasher detergent in the same dishwasher load? (i.e. half a dose of liquid and half a dose of powder)

The only websites I can find commenting on this are trying to sell me dishwasher pods

In a significantly weirder case, "Sleeping Lady with Black Vase" is a 1928 oil painting by Róbert Berény. It was lost in WWII, and considered looted by the Nazis and likely destroyed afterwards in the chaos... until someone recognized it as set dressing in the movie "Stuart Little."

Yes, really.

I complain a lot about QR codes on the internet, where the function is better served by clickable links.

But today I heard in a loudspeaker announcement in the grocery store "Scan the QR code to learn more". With NO INFORMATION about where this QR code might be.

The captcha tells me to select squares with bicycles, so I select the bicycles and not the motorcycles. But it tells me I failed.

The next one tells me to select squares with motorcycles, so I select motorcycles and bicycles. But it tells me I failed.

"Newcomers experiencing their first snow" is my favourite genre of things I sometimes see when looking out the window

Responses to this keep crossing my feed, and one thing I haven't seen people talking about is ratios.

My grandparents' houses cost 2x an unskilled labourer's annual pay. Now those exact same houses cost 15x-20x the annual pay of those exact same jobs
People wildly overestimate the economic security experienced by past generations. There's no period in American history where significant numbers of young people were just handed high paying jobs. Nostalgia for a time that never existed is a huge problem.
Why Nikki Haley’s son went radical: His generation inherited insecurity.

I profile Nalin Haley, a fascinating young man, who I believe will likely play an important role in conservative politics in years to come.

There are some kids outside having a snowball fight and making snow angels.

Problem: the smooth grassy area with lots of fresh snow that they're gravitating towards is also the dog area 😬

What time of year would I have the best luck of finding non-flannel long sleeve long pants pyjama sets?

(Don't want modal either - looking for a t-shirt-like cotton - but currently there's a surfeit of flannel)

So apparently there's AI coke commercial drama?

It occurs to me that if the Coca-Cola company doesn't want to pay artists to make a commercial, it would be faster, easier and cheaper to simply reuse an old commercial!

The vast majority of their previous ads would be equally effective today!
This is interesting drama to follow lol

TLDR, the people who made the AI coke commercial are denying it and generating fake concept art, actual concept artists are ripping it all apart as fake because the guy has no idea how any of this works
The disconnected Apple Pencil? The expression sheet with all the same expression? The art with the footsteps in the snow in front of the characters running? The file with one (1) background layer? Erasing the “hand drawn” background by hand on said one (1) layer file? Where do I starttttttt

In my capacity as a lazy anglophone, in casual use cases I often type out my French without accents and use spellchecking to put the accents in (rather than switching my keyboard language or using alt codes.)

The 30 Rock episode with “how do you do, fellow kids?” is closer to the release of Windows 98 than it is to today.
I made a “how do you do, fellow kids?” joke to someone in their mid 20s who, it turns out, was too young to have heard of that meme.

So “how do you do, fellow kids?” is now an example of “how do you do, fellow kids?”

Head's up there is a Bluesky ban scam going around. This account just joined 40 mins ago and send me this DM.

DO NOT CLICK THE LINK.

Bluesky would NEVER send a DM like this and make you scared. This would come through email and would have a more professional email than this.

Stay safe!
