I’m not the first person to make this observation, but this being the biggest story in the world at present really speaks to how much Twitter still serves as a universal assignments editor for English-language journalists.

New, from me:
America is no longer a functioning democracy. It is a competitive authoritarian system, hurtling rapidly toward authoritarianism.
This was a hard piece to write but we can't move forward if we don’t acknowledge where we are.

i find this image so fascinating. it is both a literal example of authoritarianism but also a second-hand reproduction of the aesthetics of other authoritarian states. it's like a simulacra of authoritarianism whose purpose is to attempt to make the simulacra real.
This is a real photograph of Washington, DC this week, where the United States president has ordered military occupation in peacetime, and ordered the display of colossal portraits of himself.

In every third-country removal to Africa that we know of — Rwanda, South Sudan, Eswatini — the people were imprisoned there.

There may be third-country removals to Mauritania, Equatorial Guinea etc, that ICE hasn’t confirmed, with people there also imprisoned. hardghistory.ghost.io/exclusive-ic...

Israel pioneered this tactic a decade ago: deporting 4,000 asylum seekers to Uganda and Rwanda, where they faced horrific conditions and were often funneled into deadly trafficking networks.

Dems should fight on every front.

If Texas steals 5 seats, Dem states should redistrict 30 GOP members out of their districts.

We should insist DOJ release the entire Epstein File.

Not only shouldn't we bring knives to a gun fight, if they bring pistols, we should bring machine guns.

How extreme car dependency is driving Americans to unhappiness
A car is often essential in the US but while owning a vehicle is better than not for life satisfaction, a study has found, having to drive too much sends happiness plummeting

ICE is no longer immigration enforcement. It’s a sprawling secret police with a budget bigger than some nations’ armies. No oversight. Questionable training. Just masks, unmarked vans, and executive authority. If you think this stops at the border, you’re not paying attention.

The main lessons to me of Mamdani’s win:

1. Democratic voters really are fed up with their fossilized, incompetent establishment.

2. Housing is by far the number one issue, and if you want to beat that establishment, own the housing issue by pledging to make it easier to build housing of all kinds

California cannot be a refuge for people fleeing repression when an apartment costs three thousand dollars a month.
Today I am yet again reminded of the urgent need to make it easier to build homes in California so that vulnerable people can actually afford to live in a state that protects them. What good are our vaunted protections if they come with an exorbitant price tag?

One bad Trump thing is not a distraction from another bad Trump thing. The cacophony of multiple bad Trump things at once is one single thing. It is not possible to get everyone to focus on one part of that chaos, since all the bad parts are bad enough to merit attention, and the chaos is the thing.

There's nothing immutable about the existence of ICE. It was founded in 2003. U.S. agencies carried out immigration enforcement and border controls before it was formed. Given the evidently lawless way its agents keep acting, one can see the case for its dissolution growing.
Here's a longer video of Brad Lander's detention just now inside 26 Federal Plaza as he tried to walk a man out of immigration court, by masked federal agents.
