uhhh this is huge. at the bottom here tom has this screenshot, which then links to this full story (www.theverge.com/news/867244/...). by default bitlocker stores your encryption key in the cloud, which the government can access. so, uhh, don't do that, if you're running bitlocker!
Microsoft handed the government encryption keys for customer data. Microsoft complied with an FBI warrant last year to unlock encrypted data stored on three laptops. It complied because the laptops had stored BitLocker recovery keys in Microsoft’s cloud service, a default setting that makes it easier to recover devices. The incident has highlighted that you definitely should not be accepting Microsoft’s default of storing BitLocker keys in the cloud when signing into Windows with a Microsoft account.

Dan wrote this for the newsletter last summer, about taking his son to his first Phillies game.
I told my wife after Zack Wheeler retired the first 15 batters he faced: “If it continues like this, we’re not leaving until the game ends. I don’t care if Simon is screaming so loudly the fielders can hear him.” She’d bought tickets to the Phillies as a Father’s Day gift, and this was Simon’s first game. He is 19 months old. I did not expect to last the whole game! But if Wheeler continued to pitch perfectly, we were staying. I didn’t want to jinx it by saying the magic words, but I guess I did anyway: Austin Hays led off the sixth with a home run. But it was the only hit Wheeler would allow in his 12-strikeout, complete-game win. Also finishing a complete game? Me, Jan, and Simon. We made it through all nine innings. I was almost never able to do this as a kid. My parents say I was ready to leave after two innings of my first Phillies game. But to be fair to my younger self, the current Phillies’ park has quite a few more amenities than Veterans Stadium did. We left our seats in the third inning and did not return until the eighth. We walked around the park. We got hot dogs and pretzels. We lingered in the team store to enjoy the air conditioning. We walked into an auxiliary team store in a tent before learning it did not have air conditioning. Simon ran around the concourse area. Now that I think about it, I guess I could have done most of this at the Vet, too. Perhaps my son is just tougher than his old man. There was one truly special moment: The very first thing my son did at his very first Phillies game, before he even entered the stadium, was meet the Phillie Phanatic. Otherwise, it was a day out in the sun for my wife and me where we enjoyed the company of our kid while Wheeler mowed down Reds batters. There was nothing particularly notable about this trip to the park, except for the fact that I was doing it as a dad for the first time. Being there with my wife and son was a better treat than even a perfect game would’ve been. -Dan McQuade

Everyone's memories of Dan are making me sad for being such a shut-in for so much of my life, but all the more grateful for those few times I have gotten to hang out with Friends From Online, whether its splitting a giant bucket of popcorn chicken, sundays in M Lot, or flying out to a Twins game.

January 29, 2026 at 1:31 AM Dan McQuade passed away on his birthday which is exactly the kind of fact that I would learn about someone else from Dan McQuade. Because Dan may have known more things than anyone I've ever met. His love for Philadelphia was one of his most famous traits but I used to plumb the depths of it. Years ago, before he met his wife Jan, I would take the bus down to visit him and we would just walk. For a long time. And every so often I'd say "Tell me something that happened on this block" and he'd say "This one? I don't think anything happened here." Then after about 8 seconds he'd exclaim "Oh wait!" with his index finger in the air like a little kid and tell me one of the craziest fucking things I'd ever heard.

The Phillies were going through another sub-.500 season, despite being "defending National League Champions" thanks to the 1994 strike. They were almost 20 games out of first. But I do remember how they won this random game in September against the Reds. In the bottom of the 13th, with the bases loaded, Xavier Hernandez walked in Mark Whiten'. I don't so much remember the play as I do Phillies announcer Chris Wheeler: "Way to keep that bat on the shoulders, Whit'!" My dad and I laughed. Yeah, good play Mark, way to work the walkoff walk?. . How naive we were. Chris Wheeler was right, though he didn't know why. I don't think any players (besides QLE CHIP) read this site, but if anyone stumbles across this site in the future, I beg of you: Go for the walkoff walk. It might not be as pretty as a walkoff homer, but it's probably a better strategy. Let me explain: I just finished Scorecasting, by economist Tobias Moskowitz and Sports Illustrated writer L. Jon Wertheim. As you can probably guess from the authors, it's essentially Freakonomics for sports One of the strongest parts of the book explores what drives home field advantage. Essentially, and in surprisingly convincing fashion, the authors conclude that referee bias drives home field advantage. In baseball, for example, umpires call more strikes for home team pitchers and more balls for away team pitchers4. A whole chapter opens with a long discussion of the Cubs' walkoff walk against the Brewers on July_3, 2009. As PITCH f/x shows, the pitch that Jake Fox worked his winning walkoff walk on was a strike?. Moskowitz and Wertheim also say that umpires are more likely to give this home field call advantage when there are big crowds®, ones that are ostensibly louder. And what time is a crowd louder than in a tie game with the bases loaded in the bottom of the 10th? I think you know where I'm going with this. Any baseball players coming across this post next week or in 2025 or when the Athletics move to the moon, I offer this piece of advice: In that situation, don't be Paul Bako. Don't go for the bloop single. You're going to get the calls on close pitches. Keep that bat on the shoulders when they come. Chances are you'll work a walkoff walk and be a hero. And you won't even have to do anything"! It will be the best paycheck you'll ever earn. There. Now can't nobody say this site never offered professional baseball players any advice. 1 According to Baseball-Reference, the first pitch of that at-bat was a foul bunt by Hard Hittin' Whitten. With two outs! 2 I don't even think "walkoff home run" was in vogue at this time, so I probably just called it a "game-ending base on balls" or maybe said "That muckle showed a little ginger!" 3 Steven D. Levitt, Freakonomics, is actually quoted on the cover: "The closest thing to Freakonomics I've seen since the original." This is quite high praise, I guess, as Scorecasting is apparently is more like the original than SuperFreakonomics. 4 "Homeboys" and "Awayboys," in Rock 'n' Jock parlance. 5 Yes, I'm aware of the calibration errors that possibly (probably?) make PITCH f/x unreliable, especially since that pitch was particularly close. Eh. I still buy Moskowitz's and Wertheim's conclusions -- I guess I believe all the PITCH f/x data errors average out, though I don't necessarily know that's true or even possible -- about umpires. The book's out next week, l'm sure some blogger will write with over-the-top anger about it if they used any data incorrectly. 6 Ha, the Cubs always have big crowds! This makes their futility even more hilarious. Okay, except foul off clear strikes that you can't do anything with, as Jake Fox did.
