Hey @universityofotago.bsky.social ... I know your (our!) twitter/X account now is non-functional, but have a read of the thread below as to why you (we!) should remove ourselves from it completely (or, at least make it clear we don't use it anymore because the site sucks)?
Hey Aotearoa/New Zealand academics: Here's something good you can do today!

Only 1 of 8 universities in AoNZ has left X. I think it should be 8 of 8.

(So far 10 of 37 Australian public unis left X - you're behind 😬)

Full grade report for AoNZ unis, and what you can do to help, follows.
Want to do something good for change today?

➡️Are you an academic, a student, or an alumna/alumnus of an Australian University?

Of 37 Australian public universities, 9 have already deleted or inactivated their accounts on X. I don’t see why we can’t get that to 100%!

(See end for what you can do)

We are living in your plan. The foodbanks you cut funding to are struggling to meet the demand of the people cuts pushed out of work, renters are being evicted for asking for repairs, work’s unsafer, the cost of living crisis is biting & school bills are about to arrive. #nzpol
Your plan sucks tbh.

Analysis: ‘Trust our plan’, says the Prime Minister, while stoking fear the opposition will take the country backwards

Casual observation that when you have your own thing, with values that clearly, unequivocally carry through to your policy and you have a public excited about that policy, you don’t need the marketing team to reflect someone else’s platform visuals in order to make it look like you have their thing.

If anyone has read this, there was an ‘Oh my god’ moment in it that makes me think @cstross.bsky.social is playing with us like you would cats with a bit of string. I don’t think I’m going to last until the paperback of The Regicide Report.
1st 26 read: @cstross.bsky.social’s novella A Conventional Boy. The lore is loring, and I think I need to reread some other works from The Laundry in order to do a review justice. Even if you’re not acquainted with the series, it’s a brilliant tale of what happens when TTRPGs get a little too real.

Luxon must reject Trump's invitation to join his 'Board of Peace'. Anything else undermines the UN and aligns NZ to Trump madness.

First thought about the election date: November 7 is right when a lot of university students (mostly first time voters) will be finishing up and heading home for the summer. It’s really important to make sure your young people know what to do if they are out of their electorate on election day.

Americans are realizing that unfettered federal power to detain and arrest is a very dangerous thing. I learned that lesson as a child when they put us into internment camps just for looking like the enemy. Don’t go further down this road.

“Vote for me, I can’t change anything for the better” -Chris
Lads is it good when the two major parties are making near identical ideological frames for the upcoming election, based around no promises, no hope, managerialism forever.

Share a television show that raised you.*

*The flag was utterly meaningless to me as a child. Now I know better. However, the police are still corrupt and Daisy is still a badass; one of very few on TV when I was young.

I'm reading "It Was Her House First" by @cheriepriest.com, which I've owned and been meaning to read for a while but have been in a weird reading mood.

I'm really enjoying it so far so check it out! Two people are gearing up to rehab a very run down very haunted house.

#nzpol The Prime Minister spent longer managing his Spotify Playlists than writing that speech. Nothing new, nothing to help manage growing unemployment, more cuts signalled to government investment. That wasn't a State of the Nation - it was asking people to forget the past two years.

Great to see Luxon condemn Trump's stance on Greenland and call in the US ambassador.

My mistake, he's still on holiday 15 days after he promised he would be back at work.
